Advantages of two runs per day?

Question:

Until someone is running over 70 miles per week, it is probably best to stick to once a day.  You get a much better training effect out of a single 10 miler rather than two 5 milers.  The only reasons for doing 2 a days if running less than 10 miles per day is time constraints or if you are managing an injury and can’t run too much at any one time.  Two 3 1/2 mile runs is far less effective than a single 7 miler.

Response:

When I was running twice a day,  I was taking about 3 showers a day.  I was washing clothes every day too. What do all of you do with your running clothes before you wash them?  I don’t run in the same thing more than once…

To each his own bathing and grooming habits.   I feel that washing clothes after you wear them once is highly wasteful; not to mention taking 3 showers a day.   Wasting excess water is just about the biggest enviromental "no-no" that the common person engages in. And if the enviro angle dont get ya’ then how about the thousands of dollars in water bills that you will absolutely accumulate.   My theory is that you only wash clothes [a] When you want to save a favourite shirt from getting permanently stained.  or [b] Shirts should be washed before the time comes when your health is in possible jeapordy.   I seriously doubt anyones health is in jeapordy after wearing a shirt one time. The "smell test" is likely a good indicator of a piece of clothings bacterial content..  If the shirt smells relatively clean, then the bacterial content is likely safe. If the shirt reaks a putred stench, then it is a likely bet that you had better wash the shirt.    I have about 50 running shirts and I usually like to rotate them so I only wear 2 per week. I’ll wear the first one day long and during my workouts for an entire week… and then at night I’ll put on my 2nd shirt, just so as I can have a cleaner shirt when I go to bed… So I’ll wear both for a week before I would even consider washing them. Sometimes I’ll go two weeks, but rarely more than that. JMHO.

Response:

Personally, I think you get better results from 2 a days even at the same mileage.  But, I think you need at least 3 or 4 morning off.  Roy

Response:

I live in the country and use well water.  We have more problems with too much water, than too little water.  I have no water bills and I would never think of paying for water.  Paying for water would be a waste.  The water I use will become recycled, as I will surely use it again and again.  We also use environment safe detergents as we will once again reuse the same water.  My biggest problem is using water with fertilizers from field runoff.   troy

When I was running twice a day, I was taking about 3 showers a day. I was washing clothes every day too. What do all of you do with your running clothes before you wash them? I don’t run in the same thing more than once… To each his own bathing and grooming habits.

Response:

Hey, don’t worry about the wildcards or the lottery, the best way to get to Hawaii is to go under 9:25 or so (35-39) at IME, that ought to get you a place :-) See you there in 2000? ;-) Phil (I have long and short term goals) Squire

Hi there, I have just started training towards my first triathlon which will be in Winder GA on July 12.

I’ll probably do that one too – it will be my fourth (or maybe even fifth if there’s another sprint nearby between now and then). Question:

I am planning on buying a new bike this season.  I have recently been looking at Quintana Roo bikes, specifically their new one called the Te Quilo.  Is anyone out there familiar with this bike or ridden a Quintana Roo.  If so, I would be interested in your feelings about the bike.  Thanks! Mike

I am ready to lay down my cash for a Te Quilo ($1,888 at Mission Bay, plus pedals/new cleats, bike computer and sales tax) and spent some time fondling this bike at the Chicago bike show this past weekend.  Hot bike, especially for the price!  (Top of the line Trek at the same show: about $4,500, plus tax.  Sure, it’s carbon fiber, has better wheels and 18 speeds, but for triathlon, I don;t think it is more than twice the price better.)  QR builds specifically for triathletes.  It is a very light bike and has top of the line 16-speed gearing, 26" deep V wheels, tri-bars, steep seat tube geometry, plus QR’s advanced Illuminaero fork. (Dan, I am getting a commission on this sale, aren’t I?)  In any case, in my looking at tri bikes, the Te Quilo appears to be unbeatable for suitability to task at its price point.  And it looks great, too!  Plus, you are buying from a compnay whose guru, Dan Empfield, is totally commited to our sport and triathletes.  Cool guy!  (Now do I get that commission, Dan?) –Tri-Hard

Ah, but Phat precludes not Fat, my child.  TriBaby copped that title precisely *because* she knows Fat so very well—were she no Clydesdale, no accolades (or wine, for that matter) would be showered ‘pon her Phat Head.   ;-) She’s the bomb, the shiznit, etc, etc.

Ah, now you’re getting it!  The Bomb may possibly have equalled TriBaby’s gross tonnage, but it’d be a close shave. But me, I know fat and am soundly offended that one would imply that I, ironboy, do not know fat.  Must I prove myself worthy again?

Ironboy, I do not imply, I state categorically:  Ye know not whereof ye speak!  With mine own eyes have I gazed ‘pon the voluptuous abdominal ripples no Abdominizer has rocked across thy torso.  Not a bounce, jiggle, or sag of lipidinous matter camouflages that Adonis-like physique!  (Damn, I oughta start writing bodice-rippers….tee hee hee hee hee…)  And this at a time when Ironboy said he was FAT…Ha! You are out of your league, my child.  Ben and Jerry will not stay with you; you may entertain them for a moment or two, but they will abandon you at the first sight of a real Pro like yours truly.  TriBaby need only LOOK at Ben & Jerry; mesmerized by her magnetic lipid gravitation, they will be inexorably drawn to her, never to be released from her side (or her back or her front or…..) But I will go about this in a scientific manner.  Ironboy is also boy scientist, and has developed a new dietary and training plan.  Lots of long slow TV watching, all at a heart rate of 40 or under, and consuming the proper amount of calories throughout the workout.  And the diet?   40/30/30 ain’t got nothing on this:  how about a 10/10/90 carb/protein/fat?

Again I say, Fie ‘pon thee, wanton fledgling!  All such measures will be for naught.  TriBaby takes no such extreme measures, yet facilely piles on the poundage with nary an effort.  Daily workouts, LSD work, salads, chocolate aversion, abstinence from the very sight of clinging groupies Ben & Jerry—all such mundane behaviours remain unchanged.  The rumbling, rolling waves of adiposity placidly hold their place ‘pon my frame, propagating and proliferating at will. You got no game TriBaby!

Ah, brash and reckless youth.  The Mistress needs no Game, Boy; she holds the scepter and the whip by Divine Right. Do you hear that?  That hum.  It’s the call of the refrigerator…

Run to it, run to it, Young Squire!  Pursue its seductive call, but ’twill avail ye not.  Its secrets will be lost to ye, its siren song drawing you ever forward, yet ne’er fulfilling its promise. Touche! Is this Tridorks brother or what? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – hey all, I don’t have a darn thing to say that is pertinent to triathlon, but it has been a while since I posted anything.  Therefore, I thought I’d let everyone know how my offseason is going: Those 5 Hershey Chocolate Almond bars, the big ones, that my mom gave to me before the Great Floridian…they’re gone.  I did a one-a-day thing starting last sunday.   By thursday evening, my chocolate cravings were well satiated! However, my stomach still called for ice cream.  WE MUST HAVE ICE CREAM!!! it said.  I was powerless to resist the call, but too lazy to walk to Hardee’s and get an ice cream cone.  Besides, that’s low fat frozen yogurt.  Then, in what can only be termed fate,  Wal-Mart had Ben & Jerry’s ice cream on sale, $1.93 a pint…so I bought five pints!  One of chubby hubby, one that I can’t remember, and three Chocolate chip cookie dough.  I’m proud to say that the chubby hubby died on Friday, and a cookie dough departed the freezer last night.  How sweet it is!!! Of course, I’ve also been frequenting the local fast food establishments.  That hardee’s monster burger is no match for an ironboy like me!  I figure running to the border for burritos is enough running for me. And to top it off, I’m not doing a darn thing.  I haven’t been on my bike since the Great Floridian, my longest run has been to the fridge and the closest I’ ve gotten to the pool is timing at a swim meet! Take care, ironboy

Ironboy! You are my hero! Doughboy extraordinaire! You’ve figured out how to make an Ironman even harder. Don’t just eat right — that’s too easy!  Eat the sweet slop we all crave and then go do another one! Wow! That is worthy at least of a Double Ironman challenge. If not a Triple. You are living the life that all of us, in our quiet, obsessed, tape measure- and scale-clogged and heart rate-saturated desperation, have largely abandoned.   However, I have taken hope. IF I do an Ironman this year, I am thinking: Gee, I can consume 3,000 extra calories a day. Hmm. Then it will all be worth it!!! Blueberries and Devon Cream with Brown sugar! For breakfast! Dude! But first, I have to lose the extra 1.5 inches around the middle that hasn’t gone away despite three years of serious training. Just to say I did it. You know? It’s like Everest. Have to lose it because it is there. Timothy Carlson

Timothy, you dog!  You and Ironboy should both be soundly whipped for perpetrating fraud across the ‘Net.  I challenge you to provide PROOF of the existence of that "extra 1.5 inches around the middle". Don’t believe either of these two con artists, RSTers!  They know not whereof they speak.  Now, TriBaby, she knows from FAT.  Hell, who needs to eat to get fat?  Ha!  You guys are amateurs!  I don’t even need to stop working out; the fat just spontaneously generates all across my body, workout or no workout, careful eating or artery-clogging binge-ing. Can someone in LA check a camera price for me

Question:

As a video/photographic salesperson in Dallas/FTW area I can tell you that the 500 is discontinued for a long time as far as I know.  While your in LA check out a store in Westwood called Bel Air Camera and Video and check out the cameras.  They are fair and a good place to do business. –

Response:

Hi, I know this is nothing to do with Triathlon, but you guys are the only people I know in LA. I am passing through LA on my way to London in a couple of months and I am looking at buying a camera along the way. If someone gets a chance, can they look in a camera shop and find the price for a Canon EOS 500? I am moving to Leiden in October and I want to continue with my new found love, I think there might be a tri club at my work :) but I am not sure, so I would also be interested in any clubs and events (inc du’s) in the benelux area. 3 stages of a tri – why am I in this freezing lake with 50 others –     – what am I doing going up this big hill again! – When am I going to finish?
