Curloo Bicycles is a RIPP-OFF!!!

Question:

Correction… I am buying FROM Lloyd.  I’m sure Lloyd doesn’t need me to buy a bike for him :) Mike

Response:

… He has obviously been kicked from iPrimus, now it is will be sending mine immediately, join me if you will. Please do not feed the troll. Tom

Really, the worse part of this ugly business is the association with gays.  It provides people so inclined with fuel for their prejudices, not realizing this filth is no more a part of gay life than the disgusting hetero porn websites are natural to straights.   Ruth Kazez

Response:

How about looking at the list instead of accusing people of being prejudice towards gays, it’s not "gay" postings at all its the references to "children"  and ‘Wanting to trade pics of pre-teen boys having "fun"’ pre-teen would be childen under 14 or so I would presume. If you consider this to be the same as "straight" adult porn sites then I feel sorry for you. I am currently buying a bike for Lloyd, and he has been nothing but helpful with me concerning every single aspect of the transaction.  From what I have seen here on the NG, Lloyd never posts messages that have any type of "Lloyd is all powerful" under or overtones.  I haven’t received the bike as of yet, but I am positive when I get it, I will be exceptionally happy with it.  I personally am offended that anyone here would openly slanderize another poster, especially someone of Lloyd’s caliber. But seriously. At the other end of this converstation, I am sure there sits a normal person, trying to make some money. I would like to try to sensibly address this matter, I am curious to see if I get a sensible reply. I will do my best to be civil and straightforward in how I see this matter. Firstly thanx to the 17 email messages received about their comments and ‘riot’ on this newsgroup…..Lloyd does not OWN this newsgroup…nor has he the right without prove to go SLANDERING someone who has placed a message onto the site…. From Dictionary.com SPAM Unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk e-mail. Lets check out the points 1.Unsolicited Yep – I don’t think anyone asked for information on the Dreammates site. 2.Commercial Yep – A quick scan of the Dreammates site shows that they have an affiliate program. If you refer a hit to their website, and that person signs up, the referrer gets $1.00. Refer someone to the prgram, and you get $0.25 for each of their referals. Pyramid selling at its best. 3.Sent indisciminately …… Yep – A quick search of Deja shows that the same messages have been posted to rec.sport.triathlon rec.scuba.equipment rec.windsurfing alt.sex.gaymen.porn alt.personals.bondage.gay alt.teens.gay aus.sport.scuba triangle.personals.bi alt.personals.ads The list goes on ad nauseum If anyone can see a common thread through these groups that makes the posting discriminate, please point it out to me, I can’t see it. 4.Junk Email Yep – Sure looks like it to me, that is my personal opinion of course. This n/g has a lot of readers and it is their choice, providing the message is not off topic to either read it….act upon it…of simply block it!

Providing the message is not off topic. The topic of this newgroup is Triathlon, I cannot see the relation of a web site that has personal adds to Triathlon. Lloyd of Curloo has now gone beyond was is acceptable reading….I suggest "safetyboy" and many others read his messages very carefully….he certainly uses this site to pawn his wares….when my good Company name becomes involved i will do whaterver is in my powers to stop the ‘rorting’!!!

In the fairly short time I have been in this NG, I have not seen Curloo once push himself or his business. He does not even put a footer with his URL on his posts. Seat tube angles

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Almost all of us know that steep seat tube angles allow you to stay on a more aero and efficient position. However, my bike is a road Pinarello with a 73 degree seat tube angle (or something like that) and I’m really not planning to switch to a tri bike with steep s.t.a. (like QR) anytime soon. My point is that you get a hell of a workout when you race or even train with the roadies. You can get a lot faster by doing that than by moving your butt forward one or two inches. If anybody has any comments on that, please post’em here and let everybody know. Enrico Canali

In response to Enrico, seat tube angle is one of the primary reasons for my getting online.  I’ve been puzzled by this question since I started doing triathlons three years ago.  I’m a novice cyclist and triathlete so my lack of cycling miles may make my observations irrelevant to anyone else but, for what its worth, here they are:   Coming from a running background (31:15 10k many years ago), I’m particularly sensitive to things which affect my stride.  I’ve found the run in a half-ironman i did this year to be miserable when using a 73.5 seat angle with the saddle all the way forward.  My calves were shot and my hamstrings didn’t feel to great either. Immediately after the half-ironman I received a Profile fast forward post that had been on backorder.  I had about 3 months until my next race  (excuse:  wedding, honeymoon enough said) so I had plenty of time to adjust to a new position. The run in the Oly Distance was fantastic.  I felt great, had a full stride and popped the 3rd fastest run split, not to brag but to show the difference I think the more forward position made to me. I’m inclined to believe that the forward position, relieving some of my running specific muscles, had alot to do with my split.  However, this is by no means scientific evidence.  I had plenty of time to train between races and may have been in better overall running and cycling shape.  Also, I have rarely, if ever read anything about the forward seat angle improving your running by virtue of relieving running specific muscles. In a loose attempt to approach this thing scientifically, after the Oly distance race with the good run split, I changed back to the straight seat post (gradually) and noticed that I could climb hills alot better in the saddle but that my runs felt like hell the next day, even two days later and riding in the aero bars was definitely less comfortable. That was enough for me.   That’s All I Have. Good Luck…Chris Pass

Response:

I agree that you can get a great workout riding with "roadies".  I have trained on a standard drop-bar road bike the last 4 years and raced on a TT bike with a forward seatpost.  The main point, however, is that the angle between the quadriceps, back, and gluteal muscles need to stay relatively constant.  Even in the fastest group road rides I’ve never been in the drop bar position for more than half of the time, so my torso was slanted upwards a bit versus my TT position.  However, since I run a relatively lower handlebar position on my TT bike (to allow a flatter, more horizontal back), I need to rotate my torso forward so that my back, gluteal, and quadricep muscles are in approximately the same angle relatively to each other.  The key is specificity.  You need to train and race in the same position as much as possible.  This is why many pure road riders do not ride steep-angled TT bikes…their neuromuscular firing patterns would not respond to the efferent signals from their joints and muscles.  However, witness Rominger’s hour-record ride…he used a 74-degree ST vs a 71-degree on the road.  However, if you compare his road position versus his TT position his torso is much more horizontal in the TT position, as it is more supported by his skeletal (vs muscular) system. My opinions on seat-tube angles stated above is independent of aerodynamics, which plays another (and very important) role in achieving maximum velocity of the bike.  However, unless the race is pretty short (<40km TT…if you’re mentally tough and have flexible spine and hamstrings) it’s pretty impossible to hold an extremely low aero position like Colby Pearce or Chris Boardman (pre-Superman)…therefore, it kinda goes back to each rider’s own comfort zone.  If you’re not comfortable, no matter how much the position is aerodynamically sound…they simply will NOT go fast. Response:

I have been riding a Klein Quantum for 6 years and have placed very well on it in my age-group in local triathlons. It is a fine road-race geometry bike.  I also have sat on the tip of a forward pushed saddle for 6 years wondering how I could get any LESS comfortable.  I have bought a new QR. I plan on training hard, as always, and using the new bike to full effect.

You are right Enrico, riding hard with roadies will make you faster. Tell me this when is the last time you saw a roadie run a marathon after doing a century? From things I have read that’s what the steep angles are for. Steve

Juniors in Duathlon

Question:

Anyone know how a junior goes about qualifying for the National Duathlon team??? I’m starting to plan out my racing schedule for the 97 season and need to consider if I want to/can attempt to qualify for the team.  Basically, it comes down to the date(s??) of the qualifying races (i gotta race track all spring, takes a little while to get some bike miles in). Any information will be helpful, I’ve had a real difficult time getting any info on this at all, which sorta brings me to another point.  If we’re trying so hard to get more juniors into the sport, why is so friggin’ hard to find out stuff like this.  I know the system for triathlon (Columbia and Vineman junior qual races) but don’t have a clue for the du’s.  Since i swim like a rock but bike and run real well this is what I do.  I’m sure i’m better connected (rst) than a lot of others out there and even i don’t know where even to race.  Well, thanks for any help you can provide. Gratefully, i am) Drafting Sucks.  Keep tri-ing!

O.k. i’m not a duathlete but i am a junior triathlete.  I want to acknowledge the fact that efforts are being put into getting juniors into the sports of triathlon and duathlon but the only ones getting the benefits of what USA tri and Tri-Fed put into the sport are those that are elite.  What about those people that are not elite and don’t own the latest stuff and can’t go as fast?  Last summer i attended a junior development camp in Camp Whitcomb/Mason coached by Bob Hanisch and i was fortunate enough to win a GT frameset.  This was before GT made the vengeance, so i gave it to a less fortunate collegue of mine because i think there should be more equilibrium in the sports of tri and du. Can anyone recommend a place to stay O/N in or near Fairlee, Vermont? The triathlon is on Sun. July 14th and am looking for a cheap motel/ B&B in the area for the night of July 13. There are 2 of us. Thanks. Bill Kellar

I plan on staying in White River Junction Vt. on Saturday night.  There is a Comfort Inn and a Holiday Inn in the town.  There are also several other smaller motels in the area. The rate for a one person room is $72.   There is also a Day’s Inn and another Holiday Inn across the Connecticut River in Lebanon NH.  Both are approx 20-25 minutes from the race site.   See you at the race.   Martin — Martin Feeney "Swim…Bike…Run…COLLAPSE.  Triathletes have three times as much fun."

Question:

So here is my new dog technique. It’s a wimpy one, I admit. When the dog rushes out with saliva gleaming on its teeth, I stop the bike and position the bike between me and the dog, all the while yelling, "Bad dog! Go home! You SOB owners!". I stand there and yell til the dog goes away. The dog isn’t interested if you’re not moving. It goes away. Then I ride off.

I second cathy’s suggestion.  Having been a cyclist for 25 years I have had my share of encounters with dogs.  My biggest fear is not being bitten, but hitting the dog (which I have done several time with results ……).  Finger pointing, followed by pump pointing followed by cathy’s technique work fine.  Anything more active puts you at risk of hitting te dog. Neal Washington, DC

Response:

In this day and age it is a good idea to carry mace or pepper spray with you for both dogs and derrilects ( especially pickup trucks!).

I’m not sure about dogs, but if you spray a human you’re at least as likely to infuriate him as you are to stop him – especially if he’s already really angry or jacked up on drugs.  Mace is very dangerous for the user.  Better to carry a cell-phone for evil humans than to carry mace – and, unlike mace, you can’t get sued for using it, either. The best thing for a dog is to unclip your pump and whack him as hard as you can between the eyes.  I ‘hit’ on this strategy as a kid when I was delivering newspapers.  Once whacked, the same dog never bothered me again. I usually felt bad about it afterwards, but I figured it was better to feel bad than to spend an hour tweezing gravel out of a road rash. – Tim Iverson

Pepper sprays work very well when one is confronted by  a charging humanoid, but are much less effective on canine mucous membranes. I usually resort to the "American Flyers" technique of training with Eddy. With enough warning of an oncoming attack. A rampaging dog can provide a VERY STIMULATING sprint training tool.

Response:

This thread got to be about dogs, but after lurking for a while, I have a quick, funny story about rednecks. I was running in North Carolina (where I worked) when a couple of yokels in a truck (surprise) chunked something at me. It missed, but skidded to a stop about 10 yards ahead. The yokels had slowed down to taunt me but were more than a bit surprised when I picked it up, discovered that it was a snack size snickers (with virgin wrapping), and quickly chomped on it. I was low on glycogen anyway, so I yelled thanks. I saw them laugh and drive off. 15 minutes later, they were headed toward me. They stopped (can you say fight or flight) when one leaned out the door and handed me a King size snickers and told me I looked like I was a sissy. Never had problems after that. Enlightenment comes from humor and niceties, not middle fingers and obscenities. Remember that next time granny cuts you off. joshua allen "I’m back, and I’m out of shape!"

Response:

Geez, and thought only rednecks here in Alabama acted that way. While I have been unlucky enough to have beer cans thrown at me while riding, I have been lucky to not have been hit.  More often than not the assholes, slow down and yell at you, "Git off the road." Or, they honk their horns while just behind you.   I wish there was a fix for stupid people. Yeah, instead of pepper spray, I could market enlightenment spray.

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – So Tom lemmen said: I’ve tried pepper spray on dogs.  It’s difficult to hang onto a bike and nail the dog too. In fact i’ve used up entire cannisters without spraying the dog.  What we need is a larger cannister that puts out the entire contents almost at once to create a "shotgun" effect. For the lack of any other solution: NOw I KNOW i"m gonna get flamed for this but: I don’t believe that tossing a treat to a chasing dog or a dog that’s in front of you (real scary on a bike) is gonna stop that dog the next time. I carry a dart.  Yup, a dart with a point on it.  Not a very long point but a point nontheless.  I find that the shock value of the sharp pain makes such an impression on the dog, that he NEVER chases a bike again. This is actually a humaine thing to do since the dog tends to stay off the street more. and away from cars.

I know a roadie that brings a .22 with rat shot in it. If the dogs gets aggressive, it gets a cap in the ass. 99% of the time that dog stays on the porch the next time(s). But for that 1% that insist on trying to take a bite out of him, he puts a real bullet in that gun. Now killing the dog seems to be extreme to me (I just have the pepper spray), but I don’t have much problem with the rat shot. Some might think it is inhumane, but if that dog keeps attacking people, I would rather see it, the aggressor, hurt or killed, than the rider. tj T.J. I’ll vote for Cathy’s technique but add on close encounter of the dog king, story.       My biking buddy and I were just over the top of our towns hilliest section when out came the only dog in town not on a leash.  My friend being ahead of me, as ussual, hopped off his bike on the opposite side of the dog to get the "bike-sheild" effect at the earliest possible moment.  The dog backed off but in the awkwark moment of getting off the bike on the unfamiliar right side he slammed the rear wheel on the road surface breaking his rim, too much adrenaline.   To add insult to rimjury a thunderstorm soaked us only moments later. The messege: gentle finesse with the equitment.

Picture it… The weekly Thursday night time trial out in the farmlands in Davis.  I am the first rider to go since I am the slowest.  Just past the turnaround point a car passes me and slows down enough to hurl a huge wine bottle at me.  Fortunately I was standing up and cranking on the pedals to get back up to speed, so I saw the bottle coming.  I braked and slowed enough to allow the bottle to smash in a thousand pieces.  Everyone safely completed the course without any flat tires.  I hate to think what may have happened if I had my head down as usual…. No wonder I have as much accidental death and dismemburment insurance as I am allowed. Janet

I used to carry "Halt" thinking it would keep the dogs away. My girlfriend gave me a lesson in dog avoidance while on a run once.  A loose dog came running at us as we ran by a house.  Growling and snarling, it was overtaking us.   My girlfriend, blessed with a loud voice from being a school teacher, SHOUTED very loudly "NO!".  The dog stopped dead in its tracks and whimpered on home.   I, having been bitten 3-4 times by loose dogs, was in a full sprint at this time (wrong move!).   -Rolf — Rolf "Ironman" Arands, Ph.D.     |  (Back by popular demand…)     |         "Do."

I’ve done this a couple of times, but I think my technique could use some refinement since I nearly did more damage tripping over my LOOK cleats than the dog would’ve inflicted. A word about pepper sprays.  I carried a spray for 6 months after being chased down by a big, snarling dog on a run.  I avoided injury by lots of screaming and arm waving (and I can recommend a dog encounter as a good way to find your max HR!).  My training after that was like a bad Starsky and Hutch episode:  everytime I’d hear a dog bark in the distance I’d grab the spray from my holster and wait for the canine attack.  Fortunately for 6 months nothing happened.  Then one day on the bike a big, black, FAST lab was looking for a calf to gnaw on and I grabbed my pepper spray can and aimed.  I pressed the button and this brown gunk dribbled out-there was no pressure in the can!  I threw the can at him and hauled ass.   Moral of the story:  check you spray when you buy it and periodically afterwards.  It may be the difference between life and luncheon meat. joe jankovsky "Your mother sews license plates in your underwear? What a good idea!  Why not as many languages as countries having posters here?  Just ask those who have asked to be included where they are from.  Certainly you should have Finnish, French, German and I think there is someone from Spain also.  Definitely we must exclude JJ’s language.  (JJ: if it were not for the fact that you are one of the most valued contributors to r.s.t. you probably would have been hung and quartered by the same people who just tapped your hand with a ruler.  But then, you knew that ahead of time.  I for one admire your courage to say what was bound to be controversial. The following is an excerpt from an email I received from fellow RSTer, Tony Sako… There is a company called RST that makes suspension forks for mtn bikes, and to add to the confusion, in years past Reebok and Scott Tinley have had team Reebok-Scott Tinley (RST), which amyone could join.

I’m really glad Tony pointed this out! With this in mind, we should probably consider spelling r.s.t. out in the front. So this would be either   Team rec.sport.triathlon   rec.sport.triathlon RACING Actually, the graphics that most people voted for captured this idea. (Currently, the voting is a dead heat between 3, 4, 5, & 6)  I suggested to QRman that we take a couple of the "popular" designs to the silk-screenist and find out the cost and do-ablility of each. As far as the rear logo goes, there were so many different *really good* suggestions ( 50) that there wasn’t a consensus.  There was a lot of people who like the foreign language idea.  The problem with many foreign languages (at least germanic) is that when a new word is invented, like "triathlon", they just adopt it as is.  So the challenge is to find older words that have different translations. I suggest we put "SWIM, BIKE, RUN" in 3 or 4 different languages on the back.  Personally, I think it would be cool NOT to include an English translation on the back.  What do others think?
