WTB – Old Oakley Razor Blade Sunglasses
Question:
And within 5 minutes of the original post! Actually, I’d expect Brian to respond saying that he had a pair in mint condition for $300. Upon getting an offer, he’d then go to ebay and get them for $20, and have them shipped to the buyer. Am I close, Brian?
Pretty much. As Aunt Martha likes to say, "Greed. It’s a good thing."

Hi, I am looking to pick up a cheap pair of the old Oakley Razor Blade sunglasses. I am trying to gather a bunch of the old triathlon related stuff to hang on the wall of my office. I used to have a pair during the 80’s but chucked them at some point and replaced them with a new and improved model. I would like to find a neon yellow pair, but I am open to other colors. Another option would be to find the Factory Pilots or the Eye Shades also made by Oakley in the early 80’s. Thanks Tom Thanks
Response:
I got a pair of Factory Pilots (white) to complement my red ones on Ebay. Try there for both …. but why have Oakleys on a wall? Use them… I still do new or old ones…. The FP’s are still great cycling glasses. gabe

IMHO the "best" sports headphone in terms of fidelity, reliabilty & dealing with sweat is the Beyerdynamic DT-111. They come in two different impedances (16 & 32 Ohms) & are made in Germany. The sports Sony types are fair, but once you get moving, the shock protection reaches its limits — if you want good quality music, my bet is use a MiniDisk — which Sony also sells, and is now a little more reasonably priced than it had been. This method also lets you record your own disks, and mix and match music. For headphones, sound quality-wise, and excluding all but the "bud" types, which are more suitable for running, the trade mags all seem to agree on Aiwa. I agree as well, and feel that whatever you buy for a source, you should get the Aiwa headphones — they’ll sound better. That’s my .02 — hope it helps, Neal. A couple of weeks (months) ago, two guys running on railroad tracks were hit and killed by a train. Yes, a locomotive train. Both were wearing headphones. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard from people experiencing "near misses" of cars, dogs, bicycles, etc. because they were wearing headphones. It is not safe, no matter where you are running. — Rick Loggins

46.5, Ray. With the wind in my teeth half the time, it seemed even longer! A pleasure seeing you there. IMC, here we come! (With you being a helluva lot more prepared than me. Oh well, nothing ventured, etc.) –Tri-Hard (a.k.a. Lee Crumbaugh)

I clocked in at 47 miles also. I thought it was because I had a new wheel that I didn’t calibrate right. No matter — I dropped the bike taking it off of the roof of my van after the race, and turned the wheel into a nice taco shell. So much for saving money by staying at a cheaper hotel in Springfield.

I redistered 46.6 miles and a friend had 46.4. Sure was fun riding with the wind at my back. Unfortunately, that only happened after the turn arounds…

I clocked 47 as did another triathlete (Julie Walsh). She also claimed her computer had been calibrated correctly to Central Park, NY. I really do think it was a bit long, which is why many of us came in at slightly over 2:00 when we maybe expected 2 hrs. Chaz

You’re a dufus. I don’t know you, I don’t train with you, I don’t trust you. I don’t want you that close to my bike and I don’t want to be that close to yours. Jeff– As a matter of fact, Skippy is writing up her own report. I did not want to steal her thunder, so I’m not telling anything about her experience just yet. She’ll appreciate your inquiry, however, and maybe it’ll get her to get her butt in gear and finish the darned thing! (I’ve already been on her case to do so.) Let’s see, my splits. I don’t have the numbers right in front of me at the moment, but as close as I can recall: Swim: 37:54 T1: 7:16 Bike: 3:22:xx T2: 2:16 (I *think*) Run: 2:26:xx If I get time, I’m hoping to write up sort of an "epilogue" for the Wildflower report. But maybe you’d better not hold your breath on that one! Lots of stuff going on, and I still need to write up a little something about the South Bay Tri. Response:
Try what I did at Muncie ‘94, my first triathlon: First, swim so slowly that the transition area is next to empty when you get there (56 minutes, 1.2 miles, 860th out of 900) . Then, take it easy on the bike so that you can save it for the run, which is my strong suit (did a little better on the bike, about 750th, but I still got lapped by the leaders on a two lap 28 mile loop). No one will draft you if you are riding that slowly. See the strong swimmers/bikers that are so far in front of you, they are in their last mile on the out-and-back run course while you are on the first mile. The difference is, they are walking. Then, have your best laid plans get shot to hell when you get leg cramps before the first mile!! After the leg cramps fade, struggle thru the 13 miles at about an 8:10 per mile pace, when you were hoping for 7:00. But, still rank 250th on the run. Finish in 6:05; 103 out of 117 in my age group (M30-34). I would have been 21st out of 28 in the F30-34. Got beat by a 72 year old man, and even by a guy with one leg (seriously – he put on an artificial leg for the bike and run). No one will draft you again… Just George p.s. I thought I beat the 72 year old when I passed him in the last mile. Realized later that he had started two waves and 10 minutes behind me.
Response:
Last Sunday, at Key Biscayne, I was being followed very closely by someone for a couple of miles, who would speed up with me as I tried to pull away. I finally dropped back beside him and let him know that drafting is not legit in triathlon. Also that he needed to stay to the right side of the road so as not to block anyone passing. He apologised and dropped back. At ‘my’ end of the field, it seems largely ignorance. (BTW, he was quicker out of transition than me, so i had to run him down, and we chatted as I went past, so no hard feelings on either side). Cheers Barry

I’ve been traveling quite a bit lately for work – SanFransisco, Windsor UK and Amsterdam. I found some nice places to run while traveling, the Great Park in Windsor was pretty cool – no cars, a big castle in the distance, lots of deer, practially no people(!) except the second day in Windsor a guy caught up to me finishing 12 miles (I was finishing 6) so we ran the last mile together. He said he placed 32nd in the London Marathon. I have forgotten his last name – something with a "G" I thought…can anyone dig up results for this race and point me to them? Thanks. PS – I have GOT to find another excuse to go to Amsterdam – I was just drooling at all the bike trails out there in the country…

There are a number of us. There is a tremendous variability in the ways runners deal with their insulin and training. I have talked to other runners here with similar objective situations who do things that would put me in the hospital, and visa versa. All of the marathoners I have talked to are pumpers. It is one of the situations where the instant adjustability of basal rates is nice. In my case, I think a half marathon is probably my limit on multiple injections. Be prepared for decreases in your total daily insulin requirement as you train up. Two months of 30 miles/week will cut mine in about half. Learn as much as you can about the normal reaction of the pancreas and the counterregulatory hormones to exercise. Learn as much as you can about the diabetic’s reaction to exercise. Only by understanding what is going on can you be effective in designing changes in your insulin routine to take care of strenuous exercise of several hours duration. Charles Coughran

Heart Rate Differential Question
Question:
I won a training log at a triathlon last weekend (Yea a useable door prize!). In the log there is a location to record your resting AM heart rate – laying down, your resting AM heart rate standing, and your differential heart rate (standing-laying). No where in the log does it explain how to use this information. I have heard of monitoring your resting AM heart rate to check for signs of overtraining, but I do not understand the importance/use of the standing HR or differential HR. Does anyone have any info on how to use this information. Thanks in advance. Lucy
Response:
I believe that if the differential increases, that is supposed to be a better sign of over training than just the resting HR. Someone else may have more info.
