Fitness goal reached!
Question:
Last year on the 4th of July I got on a bicycle for the first time since college (very many years ago). I rode about 3 miles, stopped every 5 minutes to huff and puff and gasp, then turned around and rode the 3 miles back, downhill. (That part was fun!) 2 days later I went back out and rode another 5 miles. And after that I just kept going….. Well, this past Saturday I rode in the Seagull Century! 100 miles through the highways and (mostly) byways of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, along with 7000 of my closest friends. It was amazing. I went ‘off’ the diet; increasing carbs for a few days before the ride, because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to provide my body with enough protein for the whole day, considering the demands I was placing on it, and I wasn’t at all sure how I was going to respond anyway. I didn’t go the high-sugar/processed route, I tried to be a little smart about it, just increasing fruits and veg, and added some grains – still low-carb by most standards, just not in ketosis. And the day of the ride I just ate whatever I wanted and whatever they had at the rest stops – all carbs – in addition to a few protein bars. And there was a bit of celebrating that night and the next day, too. I’m sure I gained a few pounds, probably water, and I don’t care at all!! I know how to get it back off. Today I’m still a bit tired, and my nose is sunburned, and my legs are a little wobbly yet, and my left ankle is sore (?), but I’m on top of the world! New fitness goal: Seagull Century 2002, at weight goal. The transformation will be complete! From fat lazy couch-spud to world-class athlete in a few short … well, years, but that’s ok. As long as it happens, and the moral of the story is just that. It can happen, and it’s happening to me. I’m losing weight, I’m getting fit and in shape, at least I’m getting there, and all it takes is time and commitment and determination, and support from the nice folks here. (A really big ‘Thank You’ to all of you who have helped me with the exercise thang along the way – Beth, Nina, Debra Long, Rudy, Borg, others I’m sure I’m forgetting, sorry.) Way to go! We’re very proud of you. I’m losing weight, I’m getting fit and in shape, at least I’m getting there,
And as you’re getting there you’re finding other important objectives to put your focus on. I think that’s the real benefit to exercise while trying to lose BF. If you can focus on fittness goals that are not scale related, you’ve already got a handle on maintaining your BF loss. BTW, since you’re getting into training and have gotten a taste for cycling… could a triathlon be too far behind? — Rudy – Remove the Z from my address to respond. BTW, since you’re getting into training and have gotten a taste for cycling… could a triathlon be too far behind?
Oh, it could be _very_ far behind – I can’t swim! I guess I could dog-paddle through it; I’d never win but at least I’d finish! I would like to start to run, once my body weight is a bit lower – pounding this much poundage is still a bit hard on the knees. It just seems so easy – put on shoes and go out the door, instead of all the cycling gear. We’ll see. This jock terrain is all new to me – I never would have believed I could ride a bike this far, either. I’m convinced that weight-lifting was the most helpful part of my training for this ride, even more than the miles logged in. Some of my friends who also rode were complaining about their knees and their legs at the end, and their shoulders and arms were hurting – mine didn’t at all, just a bit stiff the next day – and none of them lift. Squats and bench presses saved me! —– Mal

Ditto here, actually I can swim, but when I try to swim for fitness I keep hitting the sides of the pool

Question:
Yeah, I should be posting this in rec.sport.triathlon, but I’ve spend more time here this past year and several months, so…and with all the training, I’ve not been posting much here, except for the occasional snotty retort…another side effect of the training (the sarcasm seems to increase with the level of being tired). Anyway all, on October 6 I will be doing my first (and hopefully not my last) Hawaii Ironman and am taking off at o’dark thirty tomorrow morning to wend my way through all the tightened security at the airport and am *not* bringing my laptop with me…going completely against my Type A grain… I’ll post a short report after, and if I do get some computer access I’ll attempt to post a couple "atmosphere" posts. I attended the race as a spectator in 1993 and am curious to see the differences between that and being a competitor (the incredibly obvious one notwithstanding); also having done Boston in ‘99 I am interested in seeing the contrasts between those two events as well. In the meantime, you all stay healthy, relatively sane and moving forward. "See" you soon. Mike C

So, tonight, I sauntered into WW and stomped resolutely up to the torture instrument, known as the scale. I hopped on, and closed my eyes….and when I opened them, it was 4 lbs. lower than it was the last time. I gotta hurry and catch up – Alice is gonna leave me behind and I don’t WANNA be all by my lonesome. Thanks for all the support, asd

Monterey Challenge Triathlon – Kudos to RD
Question:
I usually lurk R.S.T., but I want to say something good about the Monterey Challenge tri that I raced yesterday. This race was a blast. It was fun, the post race feed was excellent, the attitudes were positive and it was just a good place to be. There was a little bit of surf, a lot of fog, the bike course was surprisingly challenging and the run course has some flats and some hills. The RD even had people polling the racers after the race to ask for areas of improvement – I have not seen that before in 10 years of tri’s. If you can make it to this race next year be sure to do so. The race is loosely organized, and I really enjoyed the casual atmosphere. It would be a good intro race for a newbie and there was competition for people who want to hammer. There are always areas that can be improved, but mainly – this race was fun. Ron Renwick How many days to IMC?????

Indeed, the 3rd Annual Monterey Bay Challenge was a great time– beautiful California triathlon course at it’s best: Ocean swim, rolling bike thru lush and fertile coastal farm lands, and run through neighborhood with some trail crossings, hills and flats. My only complaints would be the usual: Swim should be lengthened to be more proportionate. But, I say that about almost any triathlon. Even still, the "half mile" ocean swim seemed to be a short "half mile" and too short for the 16 mile bike and 4 mile run. I think "3/4 mile swim" would be ideal (although a full 1 mile would be the most "equitable".) Second, there seemed to be some bike drafting out there, with no race officials on the course. I guess if there is an advantage to be had out there, racers will take it– whether legal or otherwise. Oh well, c’est la vie. Winner was Pete Kain (3rd win in as many MBC tris) in about 1:11 minutes and change. Not sure how many racers but in the neighborhood of 300 or so. Fog burned off and made for a hot day at the beach in Santa Cruz….. See all of you Bay Area r.s.t’ers at Donner Lake this weekend…… http://reality.sgi.com/toddw_engr/tri.html

Toss in my kudos as well. There were some really awesome athletes there and lots of us BOPers as well. The atmosphere was the most mellow and friendly I have ever experienced in 7 years of tri’in.Thanks Warren (RD) and all the volunteers as well! Kathy I *tri* because…I have many skills!

Swimmer Wanted to Join Relay Team – Bay Area Tri's
Question:
50 year old runner/biker looking for swimmer in SF Bay area for team triathlon competition in SF Bay Area. My swimming is lacking – - can’t do more than 50 yds, although I can run 18 miles! Very frustrating!
Response:
So does it need to be in your age group? I’m not sure how the relay thing works, never done one, but I can swim like a dolphin and would be perfect for a relay. I’m 25 and female — so I don’t know if that works. Which tri are you talking about? I don’t live in the Bay Area, but I’m often in town visiting my folks and could make a special trip for it. Let me know. Courtney Thomas

FeBoy, are you gnuts?? You’re already registered for IMC ‘98, are you not? IMC will be on August 30th. IMG is usually held in mid-July, which will give you approximately just 6 weeks to recover between the two. And don’t forget, we have a date to go climb a mountain after we finish the marathon at IMC, so I don’t want you copping out with an "Oh, sorry, I’m too tired from having done Germany last month." !!!!! I guess I am just a sucker for punishment. I studied in Germany in May and June this summer, had a ridiculously good time, and I want to get back next summer for a spell. IMG sounds like a great way to ruin a relaxing vacation, and I’m all for it. As for recovery: I’m young and stupid, I’ll be fine. But thanks for your concern. But seriously, I traditonally recover pretty quickly and I don’t think 6 weeks will be a problem.
And yes, I will climb a mountain after IMC, you can count on it. As far as cost: I have lots of friends to decend on in Germany, and I have 10 months to save my pfennigs for the flight. Dates anyone? David Barclay IMC 1997 Triathlon: "Swim, Bike, Crawl"

Phoenix
Question:
Has anyone seen results from the Phoenix Triathlon held last Sunday? —
The Lake Pleasant Triathlon, held on Sunday, June 1 was a fabulous success with over 500 athletes competing. We had advertised a tough course and, by all reports, succeeded. Many athletes said that the course was tougher than Wildflower and Bakersfield (with all due respect to those two great races). So, if you want to compete on the toughest course in the country, we look forward to seeing you next year. Results are as follows (note the times as an indicator as to how tough the course was – our fastest 40k bike split was 1:04!) MEN 1. Gerald Kirkpatrick 2:07:00 2. Jon Black 2:08:23 3. Lance Muzlay 2:09:47 4. Dominic Arthur 2:11:14 5. Steve Foree 2:14:10 WOMEN 1. Bridget Black 2:21:37 2. Kara Hughes 2:23:44 3. Jolene Wilkinson 2:27:29 4. Jane Esahak-Gage 2:30:10 5. Kristin Armstrong 2:31:16 In addition to any prize money that may be offered in 1998, Tucson Racing Inc. offers $500 to the first male who can break 2:00 and the first female who can break 2:10. We think we are pretty safe….
