FS: Airborne Titanium TimeTrial/Triathlon Frame

Question:

For Sale:  Airborne Spectre Time Trial/Triathlon frame.  56 cm frame for 700c wheels.  This is a pre-production model that I have been able to race on this season.  I have about 1200 miles on it. It is in excellent condition.  See  http://www.airborne.net/eready/janette/Store/2001/products/spgeometry…  for geometry.  There are some differences between this frame and the current model.  This has a 1" head tube and a water bottle cage mount on the back of the  seat tube just above the seat stays.  It does not have the head tube nose cone or the fairing on the back of the  seat tube.  And it costs a lot less than the production model.  $600 obo Dia-Compe threadless headset (used) included.  Scott Spees

Gulf Coast Triathlon Race Director Survey

Question:

As the ‘98 race season approaches, the Gulf Coast Triathlon Race Committee  would like to ask triathletes their opinion for what type of …t-shirt and  finisher medal is most desired. Tell us what you want!! We will continue to  funish a 100% heavy wt. cotton shirt. You tell us what artwork you most desire, how should  the print read. We have funished finisher medals for 14 years. Last year our  15th year, we supplied finisher pins as the result of a survey of triathletes.  The finisher pins were not very well accepted by the majority of triathletes  and unfortunately the pins cost  more than the medals. We understand many  triathlons don’t recognize finishers in any capacity. Give us your ideas!!! It is our continued pledge year after year to provide triathletes with the most  professional and memorable race they’ll attend. Our continued success is based  on the support of the triathletes. We are the Peoples Race and we thank you  triathetes for making the Gulf Coast Triathlon the largest and most successful  Long Course Race in the U.S.   See You In May: Jerry Lynch, Race Director

Jerry:      As always, you always put on a great race that makes people come back and I compliment you for that. The problem with people coming back though is the tendency to compare the current year’s race with previous races. I have a feeling the distaste of the pins that were received were the result of comparing that to the actual medals received in prior years. Since a lot of people come back to race GCT year after year, they view this as a negative "trend", if you can call it that, with the hardware getting smaller and smaller. Also, for the MOP and BOP’ers, they do want to have something larger to show their family and friends that they finished a half-ironman race. This is what I see from others; I have done enough half-ironman races that a medal really doesn’t matter to me. I guess you can satisfy a lot of people if you can bring the medals back, especially if they are cheaper than the pins. As for your t-shirts, don’t change a thing. All of my shirts that I have received are still being worn by me, so they last. Also, my compliments to the artists that design the shirt. Anyway, it’s great that you posted asking for feedback on your race. Not many RD’s do this. I wish you luck in organizing your race and I’ll see you down there in ‘98. Response:

Pins or medals makes little difference to me.   I do triathlons for personal goals…to see what I am made of.  My reward is finishing a race and defeating my desire to quit and rest.  My reward is finishing a race and doing my best.  My reward is seeing my friends and training partners experience what I experience.  My reward is seeing the face of a triathlete who finished their first triathlon.  My reward is the incredible high this sport gives me and my desire to improve…I have lots of room for improvement. The t-shirt.  The GCT shirt is one I keep handy and wear often.  One of the best t-shirts out there.  If I were to add anything it would only be the location of race.  The graphics are simple, clean and advertise clearly the race.  Race Name date, distance its all there.  BIG LETTERS.  No cluttered design which requireds one to meld with nature to get the message. The race t-shirt is a walking billboard advertising the race for next year.  If the shirt is clean and good, people will wear it.  It tells a story.  If the shirt art is cluttered on colored shirt with a bad ink match the message will not even be noticed.  KISS…Keep It Simple Stupid. Design with type is so simple and yields tremendous results. The GCT is an awesome race I will be back in 98…when will applications be available? Rick Kranias/Tri-Atlanta

Heart By-pass patients who are now running!!

Question:

Victor, you indicated you would like stories about people that have had bypass surgery and are now running?  I would guess it has been over 2 years now since my heart attack and bypass surgery.  I was 42 at the time, smoked, and was fairly inactive. After going thru 12 weeks of cardiac rehab, I took 6 weeks to be able to run for 20 minutes without stopping.  I stopped smoking while I was in the hospital for several days and drugged up (mostly in the cardiac intensive care unit). I’m not to sure about running, however I seem to do a fair imitation of a slow jog.  Last September I did the local Corporate Cup 10-K in an hour, which impressed the heck out of me. I hope this message posts ok, since it is my first attempt to posting to a usenet news group, although I have monitored this newsgroup for several months. Regards Mike Enarson — Regards Mike

Mike Enarson writes: Victor, you indicated you would like stories about people that have had bypass surgery and are now running? snip

Tell them to run at sunrise or sunset – I wish I could have had bypass surgery !! A sudden heart attack at the age of 35 killed the bottom 20% of my heart (blocked circumflex artery).  That was 7 years ago.  I now run 6 -7 miles   15-25 times a month .  Running at sunrise reminds me of the hope of a new beginning, and when I run at sunset, I give thanks for getting another day in which to experience life ( both the good days and bad!)  I run in the snow, at altitude ( near Boulder 5200 ft), even in the wind (yuck). I may not be the fastest of 41 year olds ( 9 minute miles), but I guarantee that I am the only runner who really knows the meaning of "half hearted" workouts :-) Remember, most of us are in this position because of old lifestyle habits.  New habits give us a new life!  And no matter how fast or far, each journey ( and workout) begins with a single step. Apart from keeping me alive, my by-pass (quad. in 1985) enabled and encouraged the start of what has come to be a very satisfying athletic hobby.  I am not very fast or competitive but I have accumulated a closet full of t-shirts and have completed the last two Marine Corps. marathons. Goal for this summer is a half-iron man triathlon — and, of course, the Marine Corps. at the end of October.
