Question:
It’s just before 1:00 a.m. Friday night (Sat morn) and the Opening of the Olympics just finished on T.V. WOW!! Had to run for the Kleenex when Vanessa ??? was singing while the banner with the white dove was unfurled. The stands looked like sparkling diamonds and the lighting of the flame was also very moving and spectacular – will be a very hard act to follow in 4 years by another country. Congratulations Australia! I only got to see excerpts of the Opening Ceremonies (I missed Trish’s Lithuanians, drat it) but what I saw did your country very proud. I also watched the ending of the women’s triathalon and I was so very, very impressed at hearing the local announcer as he announced each runner by name and encouraged the crowd to cheer for each and every one of them. Elsewhere, the focus might have been on only the first three, especially on your runner’s second place finish. But instead, the announcer focused on supporting ALL the atheletes. Class act Australia! Frank, I’m not aware of an organized tri club in the area but there are a lot of triathletes who get together for training. Where exactly are you located? Yakabo Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

Does anyone out there know of a triathlon club/team in Toronto, any possible training partners in the greater Toronto area, or any triathlon contacts in Toronto? I am transferring to Glendon College of York University as a second year student (from Miami of Ohio). Glendon is on the corner of Bayview and Lawrence avenues in downtown Toronto. Glendon’s campus has a athletic centre (25 YARD pool nonetheless!) so hopefully finding adequate training facilities won’t be necessary, but I’m open to suggestions. Happy New Year to everyone on RST !! Sincerely, The American-born Canadian Matt

Matt, Glendon College is a great place in the city to be located. There is a great indoor 25m pool there and you will have direct access to perhaps the best running trails in the city in the Sunnybrook/Edwards Gardens park networks. From the front door of the athletic complex at Glendon you could conceivably go for a 15 – 20 mile run all in the parks following the various ravine networks of the Don River and never have to run on a real road. There are hills and flats what ever you want. Great off road trails to. However, I have heard that you can have some nasty run ins with Mtn Bikers these days. As for cycling, well everything is not perfect. Years ago, you could head straight north on Bayview and in about 20 min be out of the city. Now the suburbs just seem to go on forever. Toronto is a big sprawling city. Tough to say where it is best to ride. North of the city there is some great cycling, but you have to ride about an hour to get there. Inner city cycling is tough. I used to make up little loops and do the hills in and around Glendon College itself. The access road to the pool and the dead-end of Lawrence Ave. East are tough/hard short climbs. With respect to clubs, I have no idea the specifics. However I am sure that there are clubs. I moved out of Toronto in 1992. There may even be one out of Glendon.Try a query on the Ironman Canada website – www.ironman.ca Best of luck Steve Fleck

I’m not sure of where any might be around here. I hear of them from time to time, usually after they are done. An ex-co worker did one recently, here in Ontario Canada. There’s a canoe/bike/run tri here in Ottawa, the Colonel By Triathlon. It’s been running since 1979 (the organizers call it "North America’s Oldest Triathlon"). Anyways, it’s a big event, with various different vessel categories (single canoe, double canoe, kayak, etc.). It’s usually held in late spring. I’ve never done it ’cause I only float when I’m swimming! Rob

There’s one in Sacramento, CA, called Eppie’s Great Race that has a kayak leg down the American River (a relatively tame portion), held sometime in mid-summer. I haven’t done it, but know a few who have. Apparently, it draws a lot of spectators, who hang out on the bridges and banks. It’s been going on for several years, and from what I gather, it’s well run and a lot of fun.

Also here in the UK. I’ve just completed the Scottish Coast to Coast, which was a ‘real’ kayak triathlon held over three days. We also have shorter races, and quadrathlons with swimming and kayaking. In fact a quick advert – I’m running a race in Worcester, England on 6th October, which will be 4 miles kayak, 14 miles cycle and 3 miles run. E-mail me for further details. I did this god awful event back in May in Maumee, Ohio near Toledo. It was supposed to be a 9 mile canoe down the Maumee River followed by a 9 mile run carrying 30% of your body weight followed by a 25 mile bike. It had been raining so much that the race director moved the race to a state park almost 1 hour away from the original race site and seemed to tell everyone except my group of 4 people. Imagine showing up at the race site and no one is there! Youza! We found a park ranger who let us know the race was moved. I paddled the three 3 miles loops myself in a shorter canoe. This turned out to be quite a challenge because it was very windy that day. My canoe did circles in the water at certain spots on the course. Rather frustrating to be spinning around in a lake losing time. The hike was managable, but I had the wrong kind of backpack. I didn’t have the kind with a metal frame. Try carrying 30lbs. around with you for 2 hours. The 9 mile run turned out to be a 9 mile hike/fast walk. My wife walked a loop with me so it wasn’t all that boring. The last part of the race was the 25 mile bike (which turned out to be 28.5 miles). Again, the wind was brutal. I think miles 4 thru 16 were directly into a nasty headwind. I don’t think my speed went above 15 mph. Of course, the last part of the bike had a tail wind and I was flyin’! The whole stinkin’ event took me 5hrs45min to complete. The official timer was a joke. It was this old guy sitting on a bench trying to keep track of all the racers. I had to walk up to him and tell him I was done. Overall, this race was very unorganized and not too much fun. Peaks to Prairie in Montana is a great one. 8.8 mile run to Red Lodge (near Billings), 40 mile fairly flat bike to the Yellowstone River, then a 20 mile paddle from Laurel to Billings. It’s held the last week in April. The down side is that it has a tendency to get cancelled for the same reason that skiing is so great at Red Lodge — winter can last too long. I figure that the race has a 50/50 chance of being held (reviewing past history). First Bank in Billings is the sponsor.

Stretching advice?
Question:
:10 years ago everybody said it was essential that you stretch both before and :after you run. Now I’m told that pre-run stretches are not advised as :stretching cold muscles leads to injuries. I’ve always hated stretching before :I run preferring instead to run at a slower pace until I’m warmed up. What is :the current consensus on this. Are pre-run stretches ok or not ok? A track coach in high school once said to the team, "You can’t stretch too much. You can stretch too HARD, but you can’t stretch too much." I think some *gentle* stretching before running is a good idea, as it helps to loosen you up. If you’re going to do speedwork or a race, follow the gentle stretching with some gentle running, then more stretching, IMHO. It seems to work for me. — Regards, Chris BeHanna
Response:
Can anyone tell me where there might be a site or other place that has a good stretching program? I feel about as limber as a steel rod sometimes, especially in my lower back. Any help will be appreciated. In Him, Blake Thompson
Blake: -I would suggest investing in stretching time before and after your run (5 to 10 minutes each session – the most rewarding for injury free running). (I am about to run in my 10th marathon. I stretch religiously). – I recommend an excellent classic book called "Stretching" by Bob Anderson. It’s an 8 1/2" x 11"x 1/2" paperback. Costs about $15. Gives you stretches for most sports as well as stretches for morning, at work, etc. with both excellent drawings as well as technical detail. – I’ve implemented his "before" and "after" running stretches which I’m convinced are the best way to prevent running injuries (especially knees). Not only does stretching maintain good range of motion (which is limited and stiff for most runners) but also it helps to strengthen week areas e.g. knees and back. I would nearly equate stretching with nutrition. – I would add the following achilles stretch before and after each run: 1. while standing straight, a foot or so away from a wall, prop the front of your right shoe about 4 inches up the wall while keeping your heel on the ground (with your left foot extended flat on the ground two or so feet from the wall) 2. lean forward to cause your achilles of your right foot to lengthen 3. hold for 20 seconds. 4. reverse to the other foot against the wall and repeat for 20 seconds. Regards, Kerry

I’m not sure if the response is open to personal opinion, but I like stretching before and after running just because it feels good and wakes my body up a little bit. I’ve never injured myself stretching. Matt Chiglinsky http://www.voicenet.com/~mattc

Just moved and got a new massage therapist. We started talking about running (she is not a runner) and stretching & she asked if I stretched before running. I said "No, I belong to the school of thought that says not to stretch cold muscles." She replied "How about chaning to a different school for a while?" She suggested easy stretches in bed in the morning and espeically the one where you pull your knee to your chest. My neck /shoulder still hurts (stress…stress….stress…) but I do get going on my runs a bit better. Mike

is really hot, of approx 800m-1200m (2-3 laps of a track) prior to stretching. I find stretching cold difficult. I feel much better when I do this prior to the actual workout. I remember pulling something when I got lazy once. I find my legs less reponsive when I don’t stretch. Don’t be fooled to thinking that it is a warm day so you don’t need to stretch. I’d be very interested in what is recommended by experts as I am only going on what my coach used to say when I was younger. Paul.

Try "http://www.tms.tribune.com/fyiowa_fitness/strindex.htm" I used to have a pain in the knee after a 30 min jog, but ever since I read an article on the internet about stretching, I don’t have any pains after jogging. It worked great for me. One simple thing to remember to excercise all your joints at least 10 min before and after a jog to get maximum benefits without injuring yourself. In fact, just do a search on "Stretching" on the internet and you will have more advice than you can read. All of them preach the same technique. Good Luck! Warm up, Rao

Comeback Award
Question:
Michael Shaffer of Newbury Park, California has been selected to be the recipient of the 1995 Comeback Award, sponsored by Tri-Fed/USA and Joe Neri of the AFP Group. Now in its third year, the Comeback Award was developed to give special recognition to amateur triathletes who have overcome disabilities and have demonstrated the dignity and strength of the human spirit. Mike is an age-group competitor who was severely injured in October 1994 by a wreckless automobile driver while on a training ride. His most severe, and life-threatening, injury was the total severing of his left quadricep. Mike has endured a tremendous amount of physical therapy and began training again earlier this year. He probably will never regain complete strength in his left leg but he is going to Canada later this month for Ironman Canada. Mike will receive his Award at the Malibu Triathlon on September 17, 1995. —

Question:
I’ll be entering mny first triathlon in September, and despite weekly lessons will not be in a position to use front crawl. It’s a pool swim, and I’ve given the organisers my times so hopefully I’ll be amongst other snails (1100m in 28 min.). My concern is the reaction of other competitors. I’ll be as obliging as possible but it may be difficult during the event. Has anyone got any views on my predicament – either support or abuse? Mark

Don’t worry about it. Optimistic estimated swim times seem to be very common. If you stay in your half of the lane, no one should give you a hard time. Good luck, and have fun. — Dan Reiley, Ph.D. AT&T Bell Labs Naperville, IL

abuse you, and probably many will support you. Unless of course, you use a wetsuit in the pool swim while doing breast, or any stroke for that matter. Then the anti-wetsuit movement may have a few choice words to say. And as long as were on the subject of strokes, I think it would be a great show of swimming mastery if the "real" swimmers opted to do fly!
