Minneapolis/St Paul tri scene

Question:

I’m contemplating a potential move to St Paul.  Although it is a relatively minor consideration in my calculus of whether or not to accept the job, I’m concerned about what the local tri scene is like; re the number, type, and quality of local races, triathlon oriented shops, clubs, etc.  I’m also curious about how locals handle winter bike training (how low can you go, temperature wise?), especially when trying to prepare for an early season long course race.   I’m a native midwesterner, but I’ve lived in the south for the last 12 years and not sure how easy it will be reacclimate when it comes to winter training.

Check out "www.mntriclub.com" for the answers to many of your questions. In short, the Twin Cities are a great place to be for triathletes. -Harold

Response:

There are probably a couple local races a month.  They fill up fast; one has to plan ahead and register at least a month in advance for some.  There also are some races that are not local but within 2-4 hours driving distance in Duluth and Grand Rapids.   Most races are sprint or international distance. This year there was one half-Ironman distance race, which was yesterday. Triathlon oriented shops – situation isn’t great, there really is only one and it’s way out in the western suburbs (not convenient for me given that I live northeast).  There are many good bike shops & running stores, so the only time I’ve had to make the trip to that store was when I decided to buy a wetsuit recently. Winter bike training  :-p  I personally have trouble keeping my feet warm in any temperatures below 35-40 degrees…and am not real fond of riding my bike indoors on the trainer.  So I switch over to cross country skiing during the winter.  I feel that mentally, it’s good to take a break anyway. For the last three years I’ve done a spring trip to Texas in mid-March to go bike riding.  This year I had ridden a grand total of 13 miles outdoors before the trip, yet I managed to ride 75 miles the first day (granted, not at a very fast pace).  This advice probably doesn’t help you out if you want to do an early season long course race.  There ARE some hardy souls who ride their bikes all winter long, using mountain bikes when the roads and temperatures are at their worst.

Well there is just no experience like crossing the finish line on Alii Drive so I suspect it will always be IMH 96. It should be early June.  Note there is another Alcatraz event with a bit more running in August.  Applications for the June Escape opened to non returning types on Dec 1 last year and sold out in 2 weeks.  If you’re thinking about it, I’d look at the tricalifornia.com web site in November.   — Rec.scuba strokes pics page: www.jor.com/strokes Aquashot page: www.jor.com/dive/aquashot

5th week of maintenance and some ramblings

Question:

Has anyone here weighed an apple to see what a 4 oz apple looks like?  It’s *tiny*. However, even if I needed two hands to lift it, I would still count any apple as a point!

I now weigh apples – since I have started putting on weight – and I am very partial to apples. I recommend Jonah Gold at present – though you will be faced with at least a 3 pointer! As Morecambe and Wise used to say "You don’t get many of *those* to the pound!" (but they weren’t referring to apples).

Response:

I do envy you Diane!  Congratulations! That mini triathlon sounds like it would be fun (I think!) :o )) — Linda from Edmonton, Alberta Canada 204.4/183.8/(min goal #4 180) 155 916 mile club – 35.82/916

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I lost 1.8 lbs this week, which really surprised me!  Pleasantly, I assure you.  I feel a bit guilty about losing when I didn’t expect to, but looking back over the week, I really didn’t go over on points, so I really shouldn’t be so surprised. My WW goal weight is 150.  It’s been a long time since I’ve been below that "magic" number when I can move the *large* weight over on the doctor’s scale.  Being at 146 is almost like a dream.  I honestly don’t remember ever being this low for more than a weekend. But my neck is still flabby.  I know, most folks want a flat stomach, but I want a skinny neck.  It’s just something that’s always bothered me about my looks and something I always look at in other people first.  (Audrey Hepburn had a very slim neck.)  I am out of my 20s, so I suppose I’m being a bit hard on myself.  I really can’t afford to lose yet another 5 lbs and still look healthy.  But I’m considering it.  Perhaps I just need to get to the gym more. I have been running some nights.  Not a lot and certainly not enough to get to the point where I’ll be ready to train for the Marine Corps Marathon this year.  It’s just not enough of a habit yet.  I guess I’ll need to find another goal. Has anyone ever heard of the Danskin Women’s Triathlons?  They do about 6 across the country every year.  They are specifically designed for beginners (1/2mile swim, 11 mile bike, 5K run).  A professional female triathlete runs the course and is the last one across the finish line, so you’re guarenteed not to come in last.  The closest one for me is in Massachusetts in July.  Maybe I’ll do that.  Of course, that would mean I have to buy a bike and find a place to swim. Yesterday I spoke to my local WW about working as a leader.  They’re in the middle of a training course right now, so I wouldn’t start for a while.  I’m looking forward to doing that and will let you all know how it goes. More on my losing.  I’ve been eating at 29 points.  Since I had been maintaining at 31 points, I figured the weight would come off slowly. Well, it hasn’t.  So, is my true maintenance range higher?  Geez, this maintenance thing is more complicated than I figured. Favorite new food: Sara Lee Chocolate-covered Cheesecake Bites.  In the frozen foods, individually wrapped.  Each one is 2 points.  YUM. Okay, I guess that’s it.  I’m doing some work avoidance, because we’re swamped and I’m just in over my head right now.  Oh, yes, my monitor blew out last night.  I reached to turn it on and got an electric shock (my place is very dry and static-y).  Then it just would not turn on.  *sigh* Of course I couldn’t reach tech support last night because it’s not like I keep their numbers handy. I usually just look them up on the web, but with no monitor…. Congratulations! I don’t know why surprise or guilt should be involved – you obviously know what you are doing, and you are clearly sticking to the program. <some snippage here But my neck is still flabby.  I know, most folks want a flat stomach, but I want a skinny neck.  It’s just something that’s always bothered me about my looks and something I always look at in other people first.  (Audrey Hepburn had a very slim neck.)

Audrey Hepburn was underweight because she had lived through near starvation during the war in the Netherlands. She was the Kate Moss/Calista Flockhart/Twiggy of her generation and not a role model that a healthy woman should seek to emulate. In my humble opinion.  I am out of my 20s, so I suppose I’m being a bit hard on myself.  I really can’t afford to lose yet another 5 lbs and still look healthy.  But I’m considering it.  Perhaps I just need to get to the gym more.

The point being that these are portion controlled and therefore less likely to push one over points – unlike, say, icecream, where a "scoop" is a notoriously vague concept. I suppose that’s why so many of these diet program rely on portion controlled packaged food. Maybe the airline caterers could add them as a side line. We could make a movie called "Something about Tricia"  Sounds like a good plot.  And I am sure there are gobs of admirers on here. Matt

No doubt on the admirers, but I always thought the movie would be called something like "IRONHEART". Eric Pederson — "Real triathletes DRINK draft." (with apologies to TRIBABY) "Adventure racers can handle any eventuality, except the laundromat." (c) —Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.—

It seems that the ITU vs WTC thing is still alive… The Sydney ITU race was re-scheduled from it’s previous September date (one that is in line with the actual date the Olympics will be run) to be the same day as IM-Australia. Hence forcing many top athletes to make a choice between the ITU and IMA. I know that Sian Welch chose ITU, but of course I have no idea if she would have done IMA otherwise. Also of note was that Natascha Badmann, the current Womens IM world champion, was in Sydney for the ITU race… while Lori Bowden was winning the IM up at Forster on the same day. Again, there is absolutely no suggestion that a head-to-head was likely at IMA, but the ITU scheduling helped make sure it wouldn’t happen. Les McDonald can’t be taken seriously about any sort of consolidation with WTC whilst his group continues to pull (or at least condone) spiteful stunts like this. — MB. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Being backed up on my tri mag reading again (what else is new??), I only just now read the article in the May issue of Inside Triathlon regarding TriCanada honoring its athletes for their 1998 performances (page 8, "Amid Disagreement, Tri’Canada Honors Athletes"). True to form, dear old Les McDonald, President of both the beloved ITU and TriCanada, spoke out of both sides of his mouth.  On the one hand, he professes, "One of my dreams has been to consolidate [with the World Triathlon Corporation (i.e., Ironman)] from the beginning, but other people got in the way who didn’t believe in that dream, but it has been my dream from the beginning."  Now why did he feel the need to repeat himself like that? Anyway, then on the other hand, he completely ignored the star presentees of the evening, Peter Reid and Lori Bowden, wasting his breath instead upon lamenting Canada’s lack of short-course (i.e., Olympic) talent. From the article: ‘In his speech, he made no mention of the performances of the Canadian Ironman athletes as he lamented Canada’s lack of world-class short-course talent.  "The trouble is, we don’t have any athletes at the top level. We desperately need some world-class athletes."’ Clearly, to McDonald, only those athletes who race in the ITU’s travesty of triathlon "count".  How can the man ignore athletes like Reid, Bowden, Fuhr, and Spooner, and then profess a "dream" of consolidation? Question:

Does anyone out there know of a triathlon club/team in Toronto, any possible training partners in the greater Toronto area, or any triathlon contacts in Toronto? I am transferring to Glendon College of York University as a second year student (from Miami of Ohio).  Glendon is on the corner of Bayview and Lawrence avenues in downtown Toronto.  Glendon’s campus has a athletic centre (25 YARD pool nonetheless!) so hopefully finding adequate training facilities won’t be necessary, but I’m open to suggestions. Happy New Year to everyone on RST !! Sincerely, The American-born Canadian Matt

Matt, Glendon College is a great place in the city to be located. There is a great indoor 25m pool there and you will have direct access to perhaps the best running trails in the city in the Sunnybrook/Edwards Gardens park networks. From the front door of the athletic complex at Glendon you could conceivably go for a 15 – 20 mile run all in the parks following the various ravine networks of the Don River and never have to run on a real road. There are hills and flats what ever you want. Great off road trails to. However, I have heard that you can have some nasty run ins with Mtn Bikers these days. As for cycling, well everything is not perfect. Years ago, you could head straight north on Bayview and in about 20 min be out of the city. Now the suburbs just seem to go on forever. Toronto is a big sprawling city. Tough to say where it is best to ride. North of the city there is some great cycling, but you have to ride about an hour to get there. Inner city cycling is tough. I used to make up  little loops and do the hills in and around Glendon College itself. The access road to the pool and the dead-end of Lawrence Ave. East are tough/hard short climbs. With respect to clubs, I have no idea the specifics. However I am sure that there are clubs. I moved out of Toronto in 1992. There may even be one out of Glendon.Try a query on the Ironman Canada website – www.ironman.ca Best of luck Steve Fleck

Question:

I run 8-10 minute miles, distance 3-10 miles, sometimes do races (5K to marathon distance).  Planning a triathlon sometime in the next year or two.  I am in the Hillcrest and Kensington areas, and would like someone to run with on a regular or semi regular basis.  I’m 36, male, and pretty easy to get along with.  Email if interested. Wayne, Come down to the Marathon Clinic on Sunday mornings at 8 AM.  We meet at DeAnza Cove.   Take 5 N. to East Mission Bay/Claremont Dr.  Left over the bridge and get into the right hand land.  At the Stop sign turn right.  Go to next stop sign and take a left into that parking lot.  If you took a right you’d be back on the freeway or headed into PB via E.Mission Bay. Road racing … strategy?

Question:

As a bonafide certified triathlete, I have often forgotten to think about racing strategy while running.  This weekend, I tried it.     In my last race as a 29 year-old (in my home town, no less) I decided to consider using a strategy during the race.  What a concept.

Strategy?  In running?  !!!!! Geez, and all this time I’ve been thinking that the only strategy there was to running was remaining upright until you crossed the finish line! Anybody who has the strength and presence of mind/body to actually strategize on the run is, as far as I’m concerned, an athletic god/goddess. Congratulations, Rolf!  Good job.
