Spice Girl receives lost luggage compensation
Question:
I admit I’m a bit puzzled by this one too. I like to buy nice things, but come on, $2000 suitcases? Just what is the point here? Designer luggage is one thing I just don’t understand.
Some people like to buy "quality" and I suspect that LV may be in that range. (I’d rather go through 10 Samsonites or A-Ts myself). Some companies may well donate such items to celebrities so that they are photographed pushing their luggage trollies behind their dark glasses.

Jason,,,have ya heard the saying If ya got it,,flaunt it!! ?
Maybe that`s why she had the up-scale luggage. I got the same feelings as you on this subject. got on my left wrist a Timex Ironman Triathlon watch ($15.00USD),, had it for going on 5yrs now and only changed battery 1 time. and it keeps as perfect time as a fancy Rolex costing $1000`s. I`ve got better things to spend my hard-earned $`s on,,, like vacations, a new ChryslerPTCruiser or maybe an old P-car or Corvair to re-furbish(hobby). oppps,,better go check the chicken on the grill. later larry
Response:
But, it’s all relative.. If you have millions, why not spend $15000 on a Rolex? Some people would be thrilled to fly business class. That doesn’t mean they wouldn’t fly first class if they had the money. It has nothing to do with flaunting it. While some people buy things to show them off, I think most of us would by them because of superior quality, more comfort, or better fit. I just want to know why the dealer says the waiting list for a new Ferrari is 4 years. Michael – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Jason,,,have ya heard the saying If ya got it,,flaunt it!! ?

Well judging by how hubby David "Spice Boy" Beckham paid $700 Cdn, to get his head shaved (expensive chaps, those Vidal Sassoon stylists), I think the lovely couple have a very different concept of the value of money than you or I.
The problem is if she was just given the 6,000 or so Pounds to replace the cases, Posh would have squawked about being ignored and mistreated by BA and the Sun would’ve had a field day. trouble recovering
Question:
I have been running/racing about 5 years. I am a male, 31. Here is the problem: On October 23 I completed the Great Floridian Triathlon (2.4m swim, 112m bike, 26.2mile run). Remarkably I did not feel too bad so rested for a week and then did some hard training (higher intensity but not too much mileage) and ran a 5K on November 12th and then the Philadelphia marathon on November 20th (PRs in both but I fell apart in the ‘thon). Since the ‘thon I have just not felt the same. Trouble concentrating, not sleeping well, lack of desire to train (I had planned on taking it easy until the end of the year anyway), and a general sluggish feeling. Today I donated blood at work and they informed me that my blood pressure is up. (130/68 used to be <110/<70) I am going to see my doctor on Saturday, but I would like to hear the opinions of the folks here. Is a couple more weeks of rest all I need? Thanks, Paul

Hey, GFT Roomie!! Didn’t I tell you my post IMC problems from last year? I did basically the same thing you did, including falling apart at the Jacksonville Marathon. I spiraled down from that with a series of injuries, etc, all winter. Take some real time off over the holidays. Indulge yourself. Enjoy your mom’s cooking. Run a little, but do it for fun. You didn’t recover enough in November, so you need to do it now. Mike Tennent "IronPenguin" Ironman Canada ‘98 16:17:03 Great Floridian ‘99, 17:13:38

Hi Bob, It’s a great race. It’s very well supported and goes through some of the prettiest neighborhoods in Jacksonville. Lots of trees and fine houses. The finish is inside a stadium with a 3/4 lap to the line. They announce your name and home town to the crowd as you finish. But best of all, it’s FLAT! I don’t know why more folks don’t look at it to qualify for Boston. The weather is usually cool and great for running. You’ll enjoy it, I’m sure. Look for back issues of Bicycling, Triathlete and Inside Triathlon magazines. They have all printed articles over the winter about strength training specific to endurance sports. Probably the most unique article was in Inside Triathlon describing a Diane Bukta style training plan. It outlined a several month progression of endurance, strength and power phases. If I find it, I’ll follow up and post the exact issue. Swimslug

ITU World Cup – Sydney, 26 October 1997
Question:
Hey-ho all! I know the overall feeling on rst is against a lot of what the ITU is about, but I just thought I’d post a spectator’s view of what we had in Sydney yesterday. I don’t remember much of the detail, as I just went along to watch. You’ll have to wait for the official report for all that. But there was enough human interest stuff to make a small report worthwhile. THE VENUE The course, over the current proposed 2000 Olympic Games route is very spectacular. Two 750m triangular laps from the Sydney Opera House jetty out across Farm Cove and back, six laps on the bike up Macquarie Street to Hyde Park and through the Domain to Mrs Macquaries Chair and back and finally four laps up Macquarie Street a little way, turn around, back past transition and through Sydney’s Botanical Gardens and back – that’s twice through transition each run lap! Great for the spectators. WATCHING IT ALL Plenty of vantage points from the Opera House steps, the boardwalk between Circular Quay and the Opera House or anywhere along the run course. THE POLITICS Okay, so come the bike, it was set to be a draftfest. But one way or another, these guys and girls – many of whom have proven themselves in non-draft races – have to qualify for Worlds and the Olympics. So setting aside personal opinion and sports politics, let’s look at it objectively. SWIM The water was 19C, so wetsuits were allowed. I’ve personally raced in 15C water without a wetsuit and didn’t like it, so I hardly blame any of the pros who were there yesterday for choosing the second skin (and everybody did). Like most races of this quality, there’s nothing too special happens. Everyone in and everyone out over a space of a couple of minutes after 19-20 minutes in the drink. Farm Cove was a little choppy, so the weaker swimmers did have a tough time of it. BIKE Wheelsuck, wheelsuck, wheelsuck for the most part. Although the strong riders on the day (Emma, Loretta Harrop, Barb Lindquist in the women’s. Welchy, Miles Stewart and Hamish Carter in the guys) all proved that going off the front or doing solo efforts are still a part of ITU racing. The course was not too technical, so no major spills occurred. Although the artificial corner put in for the transition area bike turnaround sorted them out. Watching Hamish Carter come into this VERY TIGHT corner at 40+k’s and brake AFTER hitting the bend (SCREECH!) was certainly hair raising. Flat tyres sorted a few out also, with Nici Andronicus flatting first lap (see below) and Chris McCormack flatting on the way out of T1. Watching him haul the bike up onto its back wheel and pound away at the front wheel to release it was interesting to say the least. RUN With Emma coming into T2 in first place (after coming in 19th from the swim), it was never a question of if, but of by how much. With an awe inspiring effort, this amazing woman pulled a 35:00 10k to finish in around 2:01:30. She put 30 seconds on 2nd and 3rd in the first 1.5k! I wish I ran half as smoothly! Aussie Loretta Harrop finished in second, proving that being strong in all three legs (2nd swim, top four bike) makes a top all-rounder, even in drafting races. Still, she finished a full three minutes down on EC. Hamish Carter had an absolutely amazing run, finishing 50 seconds clear of local here Greg Welch, who had an amazing race (see below). Miles Stewart a close third. HUMAN INTEREST 1 – Nici pulls one for the SuperMums How’s this for guts!? After flatting and changing the tyre herself on lap one of the bike (where was the wheel truck?), Nici Andronicus rode most of the bike six minutes down on the leaders. And still managed not to finish the bike in last place! How many pros would already have given up? Six minutes down into T2. Any hope of being in the money? I don’t think so. Give up? I don’t think so. Nici went on to do the full 10k and finish the race, picking up a couple more places in the process. If that doesn’t show guts, determination and an attitude that lets us age-groupers know that she’s not just in it for the money, I don’t know what does. HUMAN INTEREST 2 – Plucky has a big day Greg Welch, perennial dag (Aussie term, we know what it means) and crowd favorite came into T1 after a fairly good swim. Then it all began to happen. I was sitting on the Opera House steps watching him not go out on the bike. I’m still unclear what happened, but he spent 40 seconds in T1, finally getting out onto the bike WAY BACK. By the end of lap one, he was with group three, the big pack. End of lap two, he led group three. End of lap three, he was alone, up near the main chasers. Anyway, after several solo efforts, Welchy came into T2 with Miles Stewart, just 35 seconds down on leader Hamish Carter. He continued the onslaught during the run, never letting Miles go and pushing the pace big-time. Overall, it didn’t do a lot of good as Hamish was REALLY in form. But seeing this guy come in a very happy second was very gratifying. Watching him afterwards, sharing his victory with the crowd, cheering in other finishers, getting the crowd into cheering in every last athlete really makes me proud this guy’s an Aussie. Overall it was an amazing day, with all the top finishers – male and female, very gracious in victory and only too happy to share their day with the thousands who turned up to cheer them on. I didn’t see an autograph refused, a handslap missed, nothing. These folks might be racing in a way that many of us don’t consider truly in the spirit of triathlon, but let me tell you, the true heart of triathlon isn’t in what we race (draft or no-draft, ITU, NGB or unsanctioned), but how we race; and every athlete I saw yesterday raced with what you will all recognise as "the spirit of triathlon" alive and well and foremost in their performance Just in case you wanted to know. Best runs I have ever had in that great city is down along the bay in the Marina district to the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Climb the steps (a nasty climb), then run across the bridge. A fabulous, really hard run. If you don’t want the hard part, you can stay on the flats along the bay. There are plenty of people to run with there. To add some hills, but not kill yourself, go up from the bay into the Presidio. Its pretty interesting in there. You can’t lose no matter what you do there. Joe

When I was there this summer (vacationing w/ family, not running

For..Aft HELP??
Question:
I NEED HELP! I just got a new tri bike and have a question on seat position. On my old road bike I had the standard setup of the boney part on my knee directly over the spindle of the pedals. On the tri bike with the steeper steat tube it seems to throw this boney part more to the front of the spindle. Most of my training is geared towards 1/2 to full Ironman distances. Any comments on wear I shoould try to position my knees to make it the easiest on them? Thanks for the help, Mike
Response:
A forward position tri bike follows different rules. But the knee-over-the-pedal-spindle theory is a coincidence of other fitting process, at least in my opinion. My ratio of femur to tibia is 1.14, which is about 3% higher than the average man. Supposedly, this allows me to put my saddle farther back at least when following road-bike rules. Even when I do, my knees are a little in front of the pedal spindle. Most people my size complain about have far back I’ve placed my saddle when they ride my bike. On my triathlon bike (which uses the forward position), my knees are substantially forward of the pedals. But the relationship between my feet, butt, and hands is the same as on my road bikes, only tilted forward about the crank spindle by 5 degrees. For an excellent and detailed article on the myths of the knee-over-the-pedal-spindle rule, and on fitment in general, look at Rivendell’s web page: http://www.veloworks.com/rivendell/kops.html Note that the article complains about steep seat tubes only because of the resulting weight on the arms. If the rider is resting in the aerobars, this is not a problems. The steep arrangement was designed for riders using their aerobars. I NEED HELP!
