Reasons for getting fat
Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I feel that way myself. However, I keep redefining what "easy" is. Most things I think will be difficult turn out not nearly as difficult as I thought they would be. Not eating pasta, working out on a regular basis, etc. Thought it would be hard, turns out it isn’t very. it is even easier to work out if I have a goal that is interesting and the exercise is not merely for weight maintenance. I am now running in preparation for an experimental low carb marathon, and it is interesting and does not feel like drudgery. I agree with you that having mini projects like yours make exercising much much more fun. I’m trying to learn the Total Immersion swimming method from the book. Never heard of it, sounds interesting.
Total Immersion ( http://www.totalimmersion.net/ ) is a pretty good program for people wanting to learn how to swim. It’s oriented towards athletes, but the program can be useful for anyone. I used their book and DVD to help me, and it’s made a big difference in my level of comfort and efficiency in the water. For many people, the aerobic benefits of swimming go unfulfilled, because they are so inefficient in the water that they get out of breath within a short time and have to stop. This is most often caused by poor technique – and, since water is many times denser than air, technique is important. In my case, I was flailing and kicking too much, and had poor body position. This resulted in my wasting a whole lot of energy while trying to "muscle" through the water. After using their program, I’m still not a particularly fast swimmer, but I am much more comfortable in the water, and can go for much longer distances without stopping (I used their program a couple of years ago to prepare for a triathlon that involved a 750 yard swim across a lake). GG – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – As for dieting, as someone who lost weight and maintained by eating less, maintaining with LC is infinitely easier. I eat what feels like a lot of food and I am not gaining. It is pleasant to have a slim life without food struggles. I thought that it was impossible. The hardest part is handling social events and, possibly, vacations. The day to dday life, is easy. Low carbing with social events, travelling, etc., is not too difficult. To do induction with social events and travelling though, is almost impossible. My diet involves not eating grains. Sometimes everything is breaded… — 223/173.4/180

Meeting to discuss new track in Ottawa
Question:
Did any of the Ottawa-based readers of this newsgroup make it to last night’s meeting to discuss the construction of a new track in the city? I had a prior engagement at the very same time (7-9pm) so I couldn’t attend. I’ve heard about it on CBC radio this morning, but I can’t find anything on newspapers’ websites. They didn’t specify that it was an indoor one. The sense I got last week is that this what was going to be debated, not another outdoor facility. Speaking of our outdoor track, the French delegation at the Francophone Games had derogatory things to say about it. The track itself is fine; it’s the buildings, etc. around it that aren’t up to par with worlds or olympic standards… Thanks for any info, Daniel — Daniel Pierre-Antoine Dept. of Political Science Carleton University 1125 Colonel By Drive Ottawa, ON K1L 5B6
Response:
It was more of a presentation. A consultant hired by the City has come up with a short-list of several possible sites one of which is at Carleton University. A draft report is to go the City tomorrow. We were told that this project is being fast-tracked by the Mayor’s office which seems like a good sign. There were around 60 people in attendance and some "spirited" discussion which will have no influence on the City’s direction. There were no plans to put the report on the internet. The City will Ext.24385. Two of the main "concerns" raised were: 1. The lack of attention to the fact that athletes need an interim facility starting this winter until the process produces a long term solution (assuming of course that it does). We have the Commonwealth Games next year and the Athens Olympics in 3 years. It is doubtful we will have a new permanent facility before then. We are coming off a year – 2000_ in which the outdoor facility was not available. 2. The concern that a "multi-use" facility, possibly using an existing building, was not of the options. The concern was that with only high end options being considered (at a high cost) it might be considered too pricey and result in yet another study which leads nowhere. Training Question: Wildflower
Question:
Taking Advil for training and racing pain relief for more than a few days is a mistake in my opinion. Advill does not repair anything, only time and patience can do that. If you feel the need to "fix" your injury this way, you should reconsider how important one race is…Also, it’s critical to prepare yourself for hilly runs with hills in training, but this is a long-term training committment, not just the last 2 weeks… Good Luck, Steve http://www.Tri-eCoach.com

I just ran one with a broken rib–Advil 800 milligrams with food every 6 hours did wonders for me–I didn’t feel the rib during the race (made deep-breathing a little tough). I don’t know about your ulcer history or your kidney numbers, but I’m assuming you gotta be in "normal" health if you’re into triathlons. If not, you should ask your doc if 800 milligrams is safe for you–it’s the dose we usually use in the hospital. DSB MD

Foot numbness in cycling
Question:
Don’t overlook the possibility that its farther up north than in the shoes. It could be the saddle compressing a nerve. For some reason, the sciatic comes to mind ,grin. It could be as simple as seat adjustment, perhaps you are too high in the saddle and reaching too far. Maybe the saddle just doesn’t fit you. I’m not saying that it is the problem, but it surely could be, and is often completely overlooked for foot tingling and pain. Of course, it could just be that your shoes are too tight. Mike
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have a problem with my cycling that I was hoping someone would have some advice on. Whenever I ride, the balls of my feet and toes rapidly go numb, as from a cutting off of circulation. This usually doesn’t cause serious problems for my biking, but when I try to make the transition to running, my feet feel like numb stumps! It’s difficult to get shoes on, and then running is very difficult. It takes several minutes for feeling to return to my feet after this happens. I ride with Look compatible pedals and shoes. Any idea on what I can do to fix this problem? Please let me know. Thanks. Sincerely, Will Green

Shoes too tight? I get this problem in the winter (it’s summer here, whoppee!). The cold air going through my shoes is the problem – all that air flow to keep the feet cool sure works! I got some Lycra socklike thingies that go over the shoe and that solved the problem. Cheers Jeff — Jeff Cook At work: Phone: +64-9-424 5388 At home: Phone: +64-9-424 0336

A few things. Any shoe insert usually does the trick. The ones that come with the shoes offer minimal support. Check the cleat. U may try moving it a bit forward or back to get off the ball of your foot. Also, try another pair of shoes. Gordo and I spoke about it and have decided to meet at 9:30am on the far east side of Aquatic Park. There is a restroom (where people can change) and some benches there. We figured that including changing in/out of wetsuits, we’d be done in about an hour which would leave time for people to go back to their hotel to shower, or go grab something to eat (my plan), before heading to the Marina Green for packet pickup and race disorientation at noon. For people not familiar with SF, I offer some parking hints: 1. There is parking on Jefferson Street, right in front of the Dolphin Club. If you’re feeling really lucky, give it a shot, otherwise don’t bother trying. There are only a few spaces there and are almost always full. 2. Try for parking on Van Ness Avenue anywhere north of North Point Street. This is the closest place that has lots of spaces. 3. If there are no spaces on Van Ness try the Fort Mason parking lot. From the end of Van Ness Avenue head south, turn right on Bay Street, drive 4 blocks, turn right on Laguna (which ends up turning into Marina Blvd). After about 3 blocks (at the intersection of Buchanan), the entrance to the parking lot will be on your right. To get to aquatic park from there, head toward the east side of the parking lot. You’ll see a staircase which goes up 50 or 100 feet. Head up the stairs, at the top turn left and follow the wide paved path over the hill. As you’re heading down the other side, you’ll see aquatic park right in front of you. It is about a 1/2 mile walk I’d guess. Feel free to email if you have any questions. Fred

If your hotel is not far from Aquatic Park, don’t drive. It will make your life much easier. Also, be prepared for the fact that at 9:30 AM, the restrooms MAY OR MAY NOT be open. (Sometimes Mr. Ranger is a bit tardy getting there to unlock them.) Probably more parking on Bay Street between Polk and Columbus, or if you are handy at parking on a hill, there is most likely parking on Hyde Street north of Bay (on the hill). Much closer than Ft. I love my Timex IronMan Triathlon watch. it’s the one that counts 100 laps (i think there’s like a gazillion models). i believe you can look at all the features at www.timex.com i think this watch only costs $40 (maybe cheaper now), good investment i’d say. it’ll basically do everything you want except heart rate, count strokes, or calculate pi to the 50th place. -kevin "No. Try not. Response:
I would recommend the Timex Ironman 100 lap watch. If you want to buy two watches, start out with the 8 lap version, then when you realize that a few more splits would be nice, you can go out and buy the one you should have bought in the first place. I believe Wal-Mart has the 100 lap ones for around $36, and the 8 lap ones for around $25. John "Why did I think saving $10 on a watch would be a smart thing" Welch
Response:
I must agree with the other posters that the Ironman Triathlon watches are great. I’ve had three over the years and they are a great basic training watch. Of course many of the heart rate monitors also work well as a training watch. However, they can look a bit geeky if you choose to wear it after the workout. Now that I am getting a bit older, and the proud owner of my first pair of bifocals, I am leaning toward one of the Nike watches. Last year I bought one for my wife and she/we have been very happy with it. It has many nice features and the large numerals are easy for most anyone to read. They tend to be a bit pricey, but that 250 lap version may well be my next choice. — Stewart Cox

Only thing I would add to what’s already been said is that I received as a gift this Christmas the Ironman with the quick on/velcro strap system. I have a couple of the 100 lap watches, the lap button seems to wear out after about a year, but I count laps with it in the pool, so it gets alot of use. Yes, I’m disappointed that the new Timexes "feature" the wraparound velcro strap. In addition to staying wet, the end of the strap tends to stick up and "catch" on things, especially one’s clothes. And with some more delicate fabrics it snags. Definitely annoying. I’ll never get one of those straps again. And why on earth didn’t Timex make a 50-lap Ironman 20th Anniversary?? The only choices are the 8-lap (what a joke) and the 100 lap (excessive and excessively bulky). Darn it. grumble. — Tri-Baby _ – o ’ – __o – </_ ` ‘ – < – __/ /o_ – (()) (()) - / "REAL Triathletes don’t draft." http://www.stanford.edu/~brooksie

I imagine that depends upon the features you’re looking for. I got a nice, simple, Nike sports watch in December and I’m happy with it. Wasn’t very expensive, has a large, well-lit, easy-to-read display and does more or less everything I need in terms of lap timing and so forth. — Aloha, -Ben- Ben M. Team Clydesdale…Where are you?
Question:
Hello Corey, email for several months. Or call me at 317-573-0928. I recently heard your complaint through Steve Locke last Friday. And don’t worry, Team Clydesdale and the USAT Clydesdale/Athena Council are still here, we’ve (I’ve) been very busy responding to interested clydesdales. If I don’t hear from you before Friday, you will be receiving, along with the other TC members, a newsletter, which should be to you by the 21st. You can contact Scott Krentel, TC California rep regarding the events we’re working on in CA. Call me for his number please. Thanks, and I apologize for any inconvenience or misunderstanding regarding you $25 check. Yours was applied to membership fees, and not to your shirt, as only members can get the Team Clydesdale shirts. Your money went to good use though, as we’ve been working hard with governing bodies, race directors and clydesdales trying to educate everyone on this aspect of the sport. Thanks for your help, and I look forward to hearing from you. Guy East, Team Clydesdale President and USAT C/A Racing Council Cochairman.
Response:
Hello Corey, I was disappointed to hear about your disappointment with Team Clydesdale. I first heard about this problem from Steve Locke who forwarded your message to me three days ago. I immediately wrote a response to you, but for whatever reason, did not go through. The email address I have for you appears to match, but this email and the other notices we have sent apparently have not gone through due to some problem. I am not a computer genious, and if I was, I’d figure this glitch out. But you are only one of two problems like this of about 500, so I assumed it was on your end and not on mine. I’m not even sure this message will get to you. Yes, we did receive your $25 last year, but unfortunately, that was placed to your membership, and not to your shirt. That is why you did not receive a shirt. I will snail mail info to you just like all the other members regarding the team, newsletter etc. I can also be reached directly at worked out. I am not well versed with the history of the 220 publication, but I can tell you that all the charter members of Team Clydesdale from 1997, and all future members will hopefully recognize that their contribution, either in time or money, has been an invaluable resource to attaining some of the acceptance we’ve gained so far in triathlon, mountain biking and running sports. And especially, for the tri-clydes, who are represented by USAT which is the first Olympic Federation to recognize weight class racing. Our hope is to see NORBA accept the Clydesdale division just like USAT and the Michigan Mountain Biking Assoc. You’ve invested $25 along with many other clydes. I’ve invested $2000+ to see our mutual dreams of weight class racing become a sportwide accepted class. And I’m very optimistic about the change I see coming in our sport. I chose to see the bigger picture, not so much counting what I’ve spent in countless hours or cash, but imagine that someday, the races we enter from California or Maine, will provide recreational athletes an option to age group racing. As a big guy, I will appreciate that. We’re also in the process of selecting state representatives who will assist in working with RD’s in their weigh-ins, and just getting started with this new division. Maybe there is a spot for you somewhere too. Our California rep is Scott shirt just to ease your mind a bit. Thanks for your announcement. This keeps me on the ball an unfortuately off my bike. Guy East, Team Clydesdale President and USAT Clydesdale/Athena Council Co-Chairman.

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Mr. Ward et al, I am a little surprised you have not received your material. Guy East in Indianapolis has headed this up and has from my experience been very responsive. I will contact him with your information and ask him to email you directly. The entire clydesdale/athena project is fairly new to us. Race directors are not required to have c/a waves, but we do encourage it. The C/A National Championship will be staged in Chicago during the last weekend in August and we are staging a c/a wave in the national age group championship in Clermont (near Orlando, Florida) on the weekend of June 20-21, 1998. I am not familiar with races with c/a waves on the west coast yet. Steve Locke USA Triathlon
I have been following the updates in USA Triathlon and I am very excited to see the progress being made. I know that there is no requirement for directors to have this division and the division varies from race to race as you probably know. It just makes sense to attract the larger crowd because they could be shuned by seeing all the very fit triathletes that are out there. I have realized like many others that I will never be a smaller person and frankly I would rather be a larger size because of my work. I am glad that it has started to gain some acceptance. Realistacally there are several other sports that have weight divisions including wrestling, boxing, judo etc. And best of all it does not take away from the other age groupers.

I have to admit that sometimes in the quest to have the newest gadget, best magazine ( Everyone still remember 220 ? ) and the coolest jersey has made me a little broke. But, when I discovered Team Clydesdale ( advertised right here on RST ) I was eager to give it a go and sign up for the long run. I guess the first problems started to mnaifest themselves when I discovered that alot of the events and info seemed to be on the east coast. I repeatedly sent E-mail to give my support and asked to receive the information and business cards so that I could give them out to the several hundred or more Clydsdale triathletes I see at races on a continuing basis. I even sent them information that I had obtained on Clydesdale races held in the California area. Then, I fell for it. The pitch. I sent my $25.00 check and have not heard a thing since. Not even a T-shirt that was promised.
I am glad to see that they have been receiving recognition, even though none of the qualifying races appear to be on the west coast.
I guess I will have to add it to my ever growing list of diappointments: 220 Magazine ( received 1 issue for that $22 or so bucks) Multisport Magazine ( received no issues for about $20 bucks) Profile ( paid $19.99 for an off-the-back rack that broke the second time out and then never received the part after sending it to there manufacturer) Team Clydesdale ( received ?…)

Any Marathons in Flordia ?
Question:
I’m going to be in the Ft. Lauderdale area over the summer (June-September) and was wondering if there are any marathons in/around the Ft. Lauderdale or Miami area. A 1/2 ironman triathlon would work just as well so if you know of one going on that would intereste me too.
Response:
Most people find it a little to difficult to run a long race, over 15K in the 85 degree plus, 90% plus South Florida summers. It is hard to find a 5 or 10 K in the summer in South Florida. Most runners value their health and sanity and avoid racing from around the middle of June to the end of Augsut.

Too Hot for marathon’s in florida, but us crazy Triathletes go for it anyway. There is an excellent 1/2 ironman tri in late September in Clermont Fl. (about 3.5 hours from Ft. Lauderdale) There are numerous other races throughout the state all summer long check out these web pages. cftsommersports.com exclusivesportsmarketing.com

Escape from Alcatraz
Question:
Well, I finally did the intelligent thing and called Enviro Sports to get the news on the run course for this year’s Escape. It is indeed a much easier run than in previous years, although still a challenging one. Basically, it’s from Chrissy Field out to Land’s End and back on the Coastal trails through GGNRA. It’s about 70% on trails, so that 11.5 miles won’t be quite so tough on the legs. Also, the very nice woman at ES to whom I spoke tells me that you can see/hear the ocean for just about the entire run, so it should be quite beautiful. Now if I can just convince myself that I *can* run 11.5 miles….. Tryin’ hard… Tricia "’Be a terrific innovation if you could get your mind to stretch a little further than the next wise crack." Tricia, I say GO FOR IT! I certainly cannot claim that I have run *every* mile of every triathlon that I’ve done & I would vouch that the majority of rst’ers have run/walked at least once in their tri careers. But be prepared for the significant downside of this tri – no Hooter’s wings avail at the post-race party.
Best of luck & let us know how you do. – Eric Bruce

You can’t body build with your time limits. You can increase your strenght most effectively by using isometric exercises such as pull ups, dips, pushups, half squats, lunges etc.

Most B-B books at the book store will be "fad body building" books to attract the "I wanna get BIG" people. Avoid anything by Darden.

Don’t really know about any bodybuilding books but the newsgroup misc.fitness actually spends alot of bandwidth talking about weightlifting and weighttraining. If you don’t get the help you need here I would certainly look at that newsgroup. For your interest I would look to that newsgroup anyhow. Cheers. Dave.

Those are my limits, I want the best results in that time constraint. And I can’t use Nautilus techniques on most exercises because it bothers my neck quite a bit.
