Yeah, but how come I can’t remember wedding anniversaries until the temperature gets several degrees cooler?

Question:

Father of teen-age driver indicted in triathlete’s death   ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) — An indictment on manslaughter and drunken driving charges was returned against the father of a teen-ager who was allegedly at the wheel of the car that killed world-class triathlete Judith Marie Flannery. In the April 2 accident, Ronald Milton Rinehart, 38, was sitting in the passenger seat when the car driven by his son crossed the center line and struck Flannery as she rode her bicycle, officials said. Police say Timothy Rinehart, 16, was driving without a license when Flannery was hit. No action has been taken against the youth, but a report on possible charges has been forwarded to the county juvenile officials, a spokeswoman for the state’s attorney said. The indictment Thursday against the senior Rinehart included charges of manslaughter by automobile, homicide by motor vehicle, driving while intoxicated, contributing to rendering a child in need of assistance and several other traffic violations. Rinehart had been drinking, and though he was not driving, officials said he was responsible because his son did not have a driver’s license or permit. Maryland law allowed the father to be indicted because the son was unlicensed, authorities said. He faces up to 18 years in prison and $8,000 in fines if convicted on all charges. Flannery, 57, and mother of five, was a four-time world triathlon<< champion and six-time United States triathlon<< champion in her age group. She clinched her fourth world championship last year when she completed the triathlon<<’s 1.5-kilometer swim, the 40-kilometer bike ride and the

10-kilometer run in 2:30:46 to win in the women’s 55-59 age group. Brian Sullivan

Response:

When I heard there were no charges initially I was shocked.  There is no doubt that this man should be held accountable for this act of negligence, assuming of course he is found guilty.  Finally the DA has come to their senses.   This is a tragedy beyond belief.

leg shaving and other observations (short)

Question:

writes: I have a couple of questions for those who shave their legs (be it male or female): Is it better to use a razor designed for a woman or a traditional men’s shaver when shaving thy legs? For the first time, clip the hair off with hair trimmers.  I get the best shave by using a men’s blade and shaving cream.  You can also use soap.

Yeah, and I think best razor is the Schick Tracer — it’s blades are flexible and curve around spots you might otherwise nick.  Truly a great product. Shaving your legs is one of those weird and cool things us guys get to do while blaming it on triathlon :)  Now, if someone could just give me a good answer for all those who ask why.

Just tell them that it’s just the way things are done. JT

Response:

In the darkness of Hurricane Fran, I managed to knock my manly Remington electric razor off my sink and turn in into a pair of useless pieces.  I was forced to face the dilemma of buying a new electric razor intended for a man’s face or one designed for shaving legs, with noticeably feminine styling.  Since I have found that Gillette Sensor works best on my sensitive face yet hacks my legs to ribbons, I was convinced that electric was the way to go.   So, there I was, standing in front of the case at Walmart for an inordinately long time.  The moment of truth arrived when not one, but TWO employees (both male) came over to assist me.  Determined to be confident with my sexuality, I asked to see the Norelco Silohuette.  It seemed to have the features I wanted, so I took it.  Mind you, I was wearing shorts, so everyone could see my stubbly legs and make the connection between the new razor and my condition. This is a long way of saying… Buy a woman’s electric razor.  They do indeed work better than one designed for the face, and they’re much less dangerous than dragging a blade across your knee under the desensitizing rush of warm water (I don’t know how women do it!). For the first shearing, I heartily recommend using the beard trimmer of an electric razor to remove the majority of the fuzz.  The first time I denuded my gams, it took forever, since I had to clean out the razor every stroke.  Next time, I just ran the beard trimmer over ‘em like I was shearing a sheep (TriDork may know about that, since they have more sheep than people down under). Is it better to shave in the shower or while dry?

In the shower.  That way, the blood can run harmlessly down the drain. Mark Hickey Habanero Cycles http://www.cynetfl.com/habanero

Hi, Shave your thighs the first day, your calfs the next day, and the third day you shave your arms. Use a clipper the first time and then do the rest with something like Gilette Excel. While dividing it, it doesn’t seem to take all your time, and you don’t get shaky, and in that way cut yourself. Do it in the shower. Nevr dry. No use spending all that expensive cream. A better 10K time

Question:

60 miles a week for a 39 minute 10K!  Good grief. Sounds to me like your potential for faster times is enormous!  I run 42 but have only two runs per week totaling 12 miles.  One fartlek, and one hilly trail run.  I think you could cut down your mileage, and just did a little more quality speed work. Pete Smillie

Response:

I read somewhere that the best thing you can do to improve your 10K time is to increase your weekly long runs…if you are running about an hour then increase your runs to an hour and a half or two hours over time..i improved my time from 39:05 to 38:44 this year..which isn’t much, but all I did was increased my weekly mileage from 30-40 to at least 50-60.  I hope to improve it more soon.  Also, you can do track sessions of like 4 X 10 minutes with a lap walk inbetween at 15 seconds per mile slower than your 10K race pace.. It doesn’t sound that tough, but by the time you get to the last couple of intervals , you’ll probably feel terrible.  I did.

Response:

As another WAG on this group once said, "To become a better runner (in triathlon), become a better biker!"  It’s hard to run on trashed legs – anything you can do to become more efficient on the bike and save some for the run will help.

Response:

:Can anyone recommend a training schedule for improving 10K times ?. :I’m currently running about 7 minute miles for 10K. This all very well … :I currently run 2/3 times a week 4.5/5.5 miles each and one of these :contains some sprints up a hill. To get down to that level you’ll need to start running more frequently and a bit longer.  Once a week or maybe once every other week you should

All good advice.  I’ve got one more tidbit to toss in.  If you are doing any other running-intensive sports, cut way back.  I play lots of soccer (3+ times a week, usually 2+ hours at a time).  The more distance running I do, the worse my soccer performance is.  The more soccer, the slower my distance pace.  If I cut back on soccer, my distance times quickly drop. Cross training does help, but it takes forever to improve in multiple sports that compete for the use of the same muscle groups.  BTW, neither biking nor swimming impacts soccer much – they actually seem to help. – Tim Iverson

To get down to that level you’ll need to start running more frequently and a bit longer.  Once a week or maybe once every other week you should do a long run (8 miles +) at a moderate, steady pace.  Build the distance on this slowly week by week.  Try to run at least 5 days per week, with one of the runs being a hard, steady run of moderate distance (4-6 miles).  Another run should be either intervals (preferably on a track) or hill repeats.  Be careful with intervals, though, when building to 5 runs per week.  Perhaps only hill repeats for a month or two.  Intervals build that speed you’ll need to go sub-6.  The remaining two runs should be at an easy to moderate pace.  Remember, also, that you need at least one full day’s rest between the long run, the hard steady run, and the intervals.  Your body will likely break down otherwise. Good luck!  And while your at it, why not throw in some cross-training (biking and swimming) so that we’ll see you at a triathlon next year? — Marty Miller Proprietor of The Triathlete’s Web http://w3.one.net/~triweb

BALANCCE DIET FOR VEGETARIAN TRIATHETE

Question:

You need a more balanced diet – more protein and especially FAT. Make sure you get plenty of olive oil, peanut butter, etc. for fat, and tofu beans, etc for protein. Pure carbs, in my experience, will not support up to 4 hours of daily training. Check out the book "THe Zone" by Dr. Barry Sears. Todd N. Kenyon """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

As a novice triathlete I would like to increase my daily aerobic training from 2hours towards 3& 4 hours range hoping it will be enough to get me in shape to qualify for the Ironman. As a vegetarian ,not I would like to avoid developping chronic un balanced diet And not losing toomuch weight. Any one with advice or where to look for answers. My appetite seems to increase and I begin to eat lots of carbonhydrates which seems to transform in to air ,for exemple after eating around 400g of rice I begin to feel starved 4 HOURS LATER. Should I load calories with honey for easy digestion? Also when I eat granola bars or peanut butter sandwiches it gives me gases , What should I do Would a steak a week help me avoid iron or other deficiencies

Kenyon : Yeah, dude… and don’t forget the deep fried lard covered mayonnaise balls! : No food is pure carbs todd; I run marathons (2:53 last sunday – five : minute pr), and a lowfat diet without olive oil, peanut butter, etc : gets me through just fine. Nimbus, though I as well am (currently) on the high-carb, low-fat plan, I feel that Todd presents a good, and valid point.  I am now training with a few guys on the PR*Bar plan and they swear by it.  At my current level of running 130-140 miles/week, I am _constantly_ eating carbos, and find that if I ingest *some* fat (like peanut butter, etc…) I’m MUCH more satisfied, and my energy levels are higher. I’m going to investigate this 40/30/30 thing further… —

I agree wholeheartedly that Team RST should be rather loosely organized   (or not organized at all?).

[snip] I think it should be "just for fun" too … but … maybe while we’re all getting cool cheap goodies we could do something nice at the same time.  Just a proposal, but how about everyone kicking in an extra buck or five to give to Special Olympics. Response:

I agree wholeheartedly that Team RST should be rather loosely organized   (or not organized at all?).  I think it’s a great idea to enable RST’ers   to easily meet one another at the races, and get together before and   after a race.  The uniforms will certainly help, but remember that there   are a few exceptional athletes on RST that have sponsor(s) and   their own uniforms (anyone want to sponser me?!?)  Thus, I agree that if   you read and/or contribute to the threads here, then you should consider   yourself a member of Team RST!  I would hate to think that if hell forze   over and someone were actually gullible enough to sponser me that I could   no longer be a member.   Oh…I do plan to buy some RST "gear", particularly if it has some cool   slogan in Finnish. —   Marty Miller (aka The Noodle) Proprietor of "The Triathlete’s Web" http://iac.net/~miller/triathlon-home.html

Response:

I agree with QRman, Trigal, Tridork, and the others who think the RST club should remain fairly unstructured, with no president/director/dues/etc. That way membership would be kept simple: read rec.sport.triathlon, buy the Team RST gear, and you’re in….

To keep the organizsation as informal as possible it should be that to be a cyber-member all you must do is read rec.sport.triathlon. Having to buy the merchandise seems too much like paying dues (it should be optional) …for that matter having to  pay for an internet connection may be also. I think it would be better to leave the idea of a "club" aside and consider R.S.T. to be a loose association of individuals who surf cyberspace and enjoy triathlons. One thing to help this along would be for people to talk about the races they plan to do, when they will arrive there and try to get together with other cyber-triathletes to talk face-to-face. This could be where any gear could be useful. But if we have that only people who buy the merchandise are "members" it goes against the whole point of R.S.T the newsgroup. If nothing else R.S.T will provide another person to give some support if you feel like your about to drop, especially if you have to travel to races and couldn’t bring anyone else to support you. This is sort-of like what the grateful dead newsgroups have. They mention a place that other newsgroup readers will be and anyone who wants to shows up. This is the type of informal association we should try to emulate. Cheers. Dave.

Tri-ing Times is $25 per year or free to members of the Big Apple Triathlon Club. Their address is:         Big Apple Triathlon Club         P.O. Box 6480, Yorkville Station         NY, NY 10128  I don’t think membership dues are over $25 though. The virtue is you get a discount in any races put on by the club.  The race calender is the main purpose of the newsletter and articles are minimal. There are usually some photos of the races the club puts on which includes the NYC 5 borough biathlon series, and several triathlons.  The race calender is primarily for races in the New England area with some listings from other area races that give points towards the nyc biathlon championships held in late October.
