It’s Southern California, so the weather is always good. I went outside anyway to take Drum the dog for a walk and discovered that Wilshire Blvd, the main thoroughfare right by my house is closed to auto traffic for the third time this year. The museums of museum row are apparently having some kind of street fair. The traffic will likely be abyssmal, though nowhere near as bad as the marathon or the triathalon (they both circled the house, within three blocks, on three sides, and ultimately formed a complete loop, which to escape, one needed to drive 4 miles, hop on the interstate, and then drive back… just to cross the street). Drum the dog was unaffected and happy as always. (I want a brain transplant with my dog… the guy is pure serotonin… he dreams more often than me, and doesn’t have periods where he just doesn’t want to do things. He is always up for play & exercise, and sleeps when no one else is interested. If you could bottle dog personality for people, you’d put pfizer and merck out of business. — Max L. Is ‘casheing something like snipe hunting? Peter — website:  http://www.angelfire.com/nc3/marengo

Response:

I think it involve "find the treasure" using a GPS and some kind of map or something.  People hide stuff, you find it, then leave something else, or something like that.

Response:

Hi Jeanette, Pardon my ignorance, but what is " ‘cacheing"?????

"Cacheing" is my misspelling of "caching" (oops) which is a shortened version of "geocaching".  We use GPS units (Global Positioning Systems) to sort of "treasure hunt" for "caches" hidden by other people who cache.  The GPS units are used to find the items using the latitude and longtiude the "hider" gives to locate it.  When you find it you usually swap some little trinket of yours for one in the cache, sign the logbook (found in almost all caches) and then go to "geocaching.com" to log the find.  It gets you out in the fresh air and sunshine, and you can choose the difficulty level (for terrain for example) that you think yourself capable of that day.  Today we did a couple that involved some serious climbing, and some that anyone capable of *walking* could do.  Caching rocks! <G — Take care, Carmen If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the precipitate. Hi Max, Dogs are so cool.  The vast majority of them are just bundles of love, slobber and "isn’t the world great" attitude.  Our lifestyle isn’t such that we could always give a dog the care it deserves, so we’re strictly a cat family right now.  The time for a dog will come, though.  :-) — Take care, Carmen If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the precipitate. Hello, Emilio De Soto here.  I grew up surfing.  A surfing rash guard is just that.  A top you wear  to protect you from the rubbing of the board wax against your bare skin.  They are not that good for racing as they typically are made of materials that, while are great while laying on a board, they are not that breathable for endurance exercise and events. Marathon training: cycling?

Question:

Just to add one thing…. When you get up into high mileage marathon training, cycling once a week is an excellent way to give your legs and lower back a break from the impact of running.  I bike to work and back once a week (about 25 mi. roundtrip). I find that to be a good substitute for the short (5 mi. or so) training run I would normally do that day. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The conventional wisdom, with which I agree wholeheartedly, is that cross-training can be a substitute for easy days.  Whatever is the hard part of your upcoming event must be trained for in a sport-specific manner.  That means, e.g., you can get away with substituting cycling for a long run if you’re training for a 5k like me, but you can’t get away with it training for anything much longer than that.  You might get away substituting hard cycling for speedwork in preparation for a marathon but even that’s an iffy proposition. I swim, cycle, and run, and I’ve resolved myself to the fact that all my hard workouts have to be runs if I want to run faster.  Now that I’m doing this, I do see some improvements in my swim and cycle times but they aren’t the point, the running is.  If you put in hard days at, e.g., cycling, you’ll get some benefits in your running, but nothing compared to what you’ll get by putting the effort into running itself. The only thing I’ll allow myself now is to put in a hard run and then, if I’ve got some energy left over, put in some intervals on the bike or in the pool later the same day.  But the rest days are either completely off or easy at either running or whatever sport I happen to be doing. Offhand, I’d say you want to cut way back on the cycling – 50-80 miles a week on the bike spread over two rides each week will keep you plenty cycling fit, and you’re going to want to double or triple your running mileage if your body can handle it.  Keep the bike rides to two hours or less each (30-40 miles per ride for most people). Then again, 10 weeks isn’t much, and it’s important not to injure yourself trying to do too much running too quickly, so be careful out there!  I’d say increase your running mileage 10% each week for the next 7 weeks if you can and see where that gets you, working up to long runs of 20 miles. Hope this helps some. -S- Hi I finished my first ’sprint’ triathlon today and have 10 weeks left until running first marathon. I started running about 18 months ago and currently run 20 miles per week plus 200+ miles of cycling. My question is how I can fit that cycling in marathon training. Which runs can be substituted by cycling? My furthest run was about 14 miles. My idea is something like this: Monday: cycling (easy) Tuesday: running (speedwork/hills) Wednesday: cycling (hard) Thursday: running (easy) Friday: off Saturday: long run Sunday: long ride Will this work out?  Do I need all those long runs or can I do some long bike rides on Saturday too? Thanks in advance! Before you buy.

Before you buy.

Response:

I’ve completed 7 marathons and my best finish came in Atlanta which I consider to be the toughest course I’ve run.  I attribute my best finish to the mountain biking I did that fall.  Almost every weekend I would run my long run on Saturday and spend 2-3 hours in the North Georia mountains on Sunday mountain biking.  I couldn’t handle this after a 20 miler on Saturday though. Oh to be single again and have the spare time to train like that. Got questions?  Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. Up to 100 minutes free! http://www.keen.com

Question:

I did my first triathlon last week.  I found out quickly that pool work and open water swimming are not the same!   I must have swum 1200 meters to go 800.

practicing in the open water whenever you can could be a great help. specially for those of us who are more used to swiming in their own lane in a pool…  My question is this…how do you keep from swallowing water with all that splashing and chopping going on with the other swimmers.  I had to abandon all

you can try to start from the side where there are less people around. or wait for a short time and let the mass move on before you get started..  atleast till you get used to the mass start. my swim coaching and swim with my head out of the water.  By the way..I exited the water last.

With practice, you learn to automatically skip the breath when water hits your mouth. I had to abandon all my swim coaching and swim with my head out of the water.  By the way..I exited the water last.

Find a pool that’s so crowded you have to share lanes and circle, with 3-4 people or more per lane. You’ll get plenty of practice with wave action and splashing.

Response:

I had to miss that race due to a vacation planned poorly, I had my first experiment with an ocean swim on the same day, i can say that open water swimming is completely different than pool swimming.  Somthing about not being able to see more than a few feet gives you an uneasy feeling.  I am pretty used to swimming in the waves since i swim at a crowded pool.  I am lucky if there are only 5 people in the same lane.  Dont worry about being last at the next race on the 18 i will be then one that is last. Ron C Half drowned in Columbus

Response:

Congratulations on finishing!!! When it comes to open water swim starts… I have one suggestion for you. It is: Start in the back and off to the side of all the other swimmers. (The front of the pack is populated by people who are willing to swim over each other to get out of the water first. If you are inexperienced, don’t play that game. Start in the back. You may find that you pass people who started in front of you, because they panicked and had to slow down, while you gave yourself plenty of room, and just swam.) good luck, Gail – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I did my first triathlon last week.  I found out quickly that pool work and open water swimming are not the same!   I must have swum 1200 meters to go 800.  I freaked at first in the water and hyperventilated because I got 3 mouthfuls of water at the very start. Response:

Hey I was there at Deer Creek and it was my first open water swim too. There was plenty of open water close to the bouy line and the water was surprisingly warm.  I’d recommend going to the outside rather than inside as I found it hard spotting the course with the bouys always straight ahead rather than off to one side.  Good luck at Maumee next week if you’re headed there!

Response:

practicing in the open water whenever you can could be a great help. specially for those of us who are more used to swiming in their own lane in a pool…

I found that there was an Aquaerobics class at my pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon. They take the first two lanes in the lap pool and the one next to them is generally empty. I tried to grab that lane when I could because some of the participants are… how can I say this…. capable of displacing large quantities of water and Marcus really got them jumping. you can try to start from the side where there are less people around. or wait for a short time and let the mass move on before you get started..  atleast till you get used to the mass start.

I concur. It’s worth swimming a few extra yards to stay out of that madness. TTFN, Ryan

One way to motivate ourselves is to tell others our goals.  I got this initial idea from Jennifer who posts frequently on this bboard, as she has posted some of her workouts and goals here.  I worship all that can run a sub 7 minute mile as I can’t do this (yet) without dropping dead onto the floor. – Carra (runner for almost 5 months now) — http://more.at/easy – Make the most of your time = money! http://start.at/carra –  My first web page http://www.studynow.com – Medical Bookstore Share what you know. DQ's instead of time penalties/Riverwatch

Question:

What’d'ya all think about the DQ vs. time penalty thing? Bet those racers think twice next time. Schwing

I think it’s great!  I’d consider traveling from CT to go to this race next year. I love the idea of draft marshalls in disguise and DQ’s after one warning, I wish all races were done this way Tim Hignett Buaidh No Bas http://members.aol.com/hignett/index.html

I love the idea of draft marshalls in disguise and DQ’s after one : warning, I wish all races were done this way Personally, I hate the idea of plain-clothes draft marshals.  It cannot be done fairly.  One cannot ride a bike, judge distance, watch an event play out for as much as fifteen seconds without taking one’s eyes off the event, and then write down a detailed description of what happened before witnessing the next event.  Not only can that not be done, but that cyclist is taking up space, on the left side of the road, and preventing legal passes (blocking). I do not know a sport where the referees should be hidden from the participants.  If we have to be that sneaky in triathlon, a great deal is wrong with our sport. If anyone ever goes to a USAT sanctioned event where they claim to use marshals on bikes, I please contact me.  USAT referees are forbidden to take calls from bicycle marshals.   Charlie Crawford USAT Commissioner of Officials

And I hate the idea of random drug testing.  But can you imagine the mess we would have if Olympic and World Championship athletes were never tested. Why, it would be… —-  well, it would be similar to the drafting situation we have in triathlons! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Personally, I hate the idea of plain-clothes draft marshals

Response:

Some news on the fight against drafting at non-drafting races. Place: Northeast, Maryland Race: Riverwatch Triathlon and Biathlon (some suggest renaming the GooseS**T triathlon)            Maryland State Championships Race Director Brad gave a pre-race speech stating drafters would be DQ’d, and that he had draft marshalls on the course and draft marshalls disquised as racers on the course. A little more than a dozen of the more than 600 athletes were DQ’d for drafting. No time penalties, just DQ’s. Even though it sounded suspicious to me until confirmed, Brad did have cyclists on the course as draft marshalls, they went out with the lead packs and in the middle too. I was told by him that everyone was given a chance by being told to stop sucking on wheels and each time was greeted by a 3 finger salute or the like, then they were DQ’d. Nice how cheaters treat fellow athletes, probably a shock to find out they were draft marshalls. I did not observe any drafting during the race. This was a really nice race, with alot of first timers that all enjoyed it, except for the goosecrap all around. And to have the duathlon and triathlon going on at the same time is a serious coordination effort, but it worked. I think it would be an awesome race T-shirt if it said "GooseShit Triathlon" next year. What’d'ya all think about the DQ vs. time penalty thing? Bet those racers think twice next time. Schwing

Where is the new Triathlete mag?!?!

ok… this is obscene.  I’ve looked everywhere for it.  Nowhere seems to antsy when I don’t get enough proper reading material….  Has anyone else not been able to find it???  Any info?? Thanks in Advance,             Salvador Santolucito III

Response:

It looks to me as the folks at tri mag are having some financial difficulties, though they deny it.  The "Ironman Preview" edition got to me the day after Ironman last year.  When I called them to discuss it they simply couldn’t explain.  The funny thing was that my local grocery store that always has it right when it hits the stands didn’t have it yet either.  I’ve also noticed less content over the past few months.  If it weren’t one of the few descent sources of info (printed, monthly) I’d cancel my subscription. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – ok… this is obscene.  I’ve looked everywhere for it.  Nowhere seems to antsy when I don’t get enough proper reading material….  Has anyone else not been able to find it???  Any info?? Why don’t you e-mail the magazine yourself? — Jeffrey Justice Oceanside, CA Oceanside, CA

I saw the new Triathlete Mag on the newstands in Ca. , but I have not received my issue and I am a subscriber. I am also wondering about finances and such. Triathlete was publishing Winning and I haven’t received that issue either!

Response:

Sounds like Triathlete magazine is taking advantage of their near monopoly position in the field of triathlon info.  I paid for my subscription in early november and I’m STILL getting "unpaid account" notices from them (even after sending some furious e-mails to their customer service). Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for the issues to start arriving — 6 months after I subscribed!  Remember those Power Bar samples they promised to new subscribers?  They exist only in "Triathlete’s" imagination.  I don’t care any more that they’re the only mag — I’m cancelling anyway out of principle.

Energy Bar Comparison

Question:

am interested in what brand of energy bar is most commonly used to give one that carb boost one needs in the middle of a long run or triathalon.  I would also be interested in any other bars you’ve tried and why you didn’t like them or chose not to use them.  Thanks. Lindsay Dyce Vancouver, BC

For runs of 50 miles and longer, I take along three brands: PowerBar, BTU Stoker, and Clif.  All are available at better grocery stores in my city. The reason for three choices is that its hard to predict just which will seem edible once I’m suffering the stress of running long distances.  For races, I’d rather skip the bars and eat salty boiled potatoes, but in a self-supported training run the bars are more practical to handle. For those who aren’t familiar with Stoker and Clif, Stoker is made like Power, a thick gunk extruded into the wrapper.  Clif is a compromise between gunk versus granola bar texture.  As such, Clif is much less likely to freeze up in cold weather. I also use GU for its small caffeine dosage, and a sport drink for low-cost massive calories. Gordon Chace

I prefer Carbo-Crunch bars, they provide  simple carbs for immediate energy(which I normally need by the time I remember to eat), as well as a blend of complex carbs and protein for sustained energy.  Also they don’t get hard in the winter or soft in the heat, which is nice.  Also I find them more palatable then other brands when I’m running.  I also rely(sp) heavily on a fluid replacement drnk, which I believe is actually more important for me then the power bars.

Orange County Bike Course Info

Question:

Brian: Thanks much for the post on the Orange County Bike course! TriCooter

Response:

I have just today (Tuesday) received from Pacific Sports the course map for the Orange County Performing Arts Triathlon bike course, which will be the US Age Group Championship on June 22, 1996. Thanks to race director Jack Caress who was kind enough to share an early map with me, so I could in turn share it with RST since I live just a few miles away. The course requires two loops of terrain very similar to prior years. It is advertised at 24.8 miles. It covers parts of the 1984 Olympic cycling course. The route has rolling hills that will require some out-of-the-saddle climbing for many riders, and some very long and fast downhills. The roads, which will be closed, are wide and well-maintained, so drafting should not be a problem. The course is also wide open in terms of sight lines. I also have the run course route, which has very similar terrain. I’ll run it soon and let you know more about it. As I recall, there is no flat on this course. It’s either up or down. I will ride the course soon, perhaps this weekend or next, and give a more detailed report, though I lack the equipment to give any percentages on the steepness of grades. Perhaps we could put together an RST ride in February or March. Locals such as Tim Carlson, JJ, Trigal, etc. could convene some weekend morning and we could give it a try together. Send me an e-mail if you’re interested. Here’s the bike route, as described by Pacific Sports. If you want a map, email me your fax number and I’ll fax it to you. 40 KILOMETER BIKE – MISSION VIEJO & ORANGE COUNTY The second leg of the event is a new, challenging 24.8 miles route through the rolling hills and well maintained roads of Mission Viejo and The County of Orange. Each direction of cyclists will be separated by a line of cones. The course will be completely closed to non-official vehicle traffic. Leave the transition area heading uphill using the left side of the North Beach access road. At the top of the hill turn right onto Olympiad Road. Take Olympiad south 4.2 miles to Oso Parkway and turn left. (Olympiad Rd become Felipe south of La Paz.) Continue east on Oso 2.0 miles (past Antonio). At the 6.2 mile mark, complete the turnaround and head west on Oso, making a right turn onto Felipe/Olympiad and continue northbound towards Lake Mission Viejo. Near the entrance to the Lake, another turnaround will be staged and cyclists will complete another lap of the 12.4 mile loop. Upon returning to the Lake entrance the second time, cyclists will proceed to the transition area. Any questions, just email me. Brian Sullivan

Team Nut Case

Question:

I cannot believe that someone has proposed a RST Team. It’s an oxymoron, triathlets are nut case individuals having a bash at life.  The thought of sitting around with cute ‘RST Team’ Tees and the like in lots of languages makes me want to take up sewing for excitement. Triathlon is a sport for individuals if you  must cling together please call yourself a club and don’t clog up this excellent source of information, knowledge and experience with your mindless ‘cool’ chatter. I’d do triathlons even if I had to do them alone, in fact I’m so slow I often do. But I always have time to appreciate the splender and challange of it all, before long you team guys will have a code of conduct: – no spitting, no talking to non members, no wearing your team duds if they are a little stinky… Heck, come on guys tell me it was all just a joke, -w: :w w

Response:

don’t clog up this excellent source of information, knowledge and experience

But look at the list of enthusiastic rst’ers who are part of this movement.  Look at their names.  Those excellent sources of information, knowledge and experience are all part of "you team guys." If they follow your advice and stop clogging up this newsgroup we will all lose the excellent sources. Ruth Kazez
